My son doubled his holdings of silver today. He went to the LCS and got his first ASE. He got interested in coins from me and his first merit badge was coin collecting. He's been roll searching nickels and has aquired a few War Nickels as well as some 40% Kennedys from the bargin bin at the LCS.

He made some money helping his grandmother dig up the garden and decided to take his nickel hoard to the bank to cash out of. Starting next year he'll be mowing his grandparents 6 lot yard for $15 per time. He plans to put 1/2 of his earnings into silver.

I'll get his nickel hoard started again next week by getting him a few rolls. He's working on his 38' to 60' book now. The newer books are full.

I'm proud of my son for his money discipline when it comes to collecting. Just had to brag on him a little.

Well done!

I remember being his age when my father would take me to the coin store. I remember digging through the junk silver bin to pick out the best coins I could find!

May your son's passion for coins/PM's last his lifetime!

And well you should! Great story and an excellent example of fine parenting, IMO. The greatest dividends we can earn in this life come from the time we invest in our kids.

Children have to be taught financial discipline.
It does not come natural.
He must be following your example. Good for both
of you!!

So glad to hear you have someone to teach the hobby too!

Getting started this early, he will be one of the best!

Just out of curiosity, what must one complete to acquire a coin collecting merit badge? Does one have to complete a certain set from circulation? It appears to me that over the decades this may have to be revamped, what with the massive roll hunting that's taking place right now; it's harder to find some stuff in circulation as opposed to, say, 20 years ago.

HOW WONDERFUL!
Some bragging about a child instead of bragging about one's coins!
Both of you will, one day, look back upon these times as very happy ones.

The requirements appear to be less difficult than for stamps.

I agree, TBG. In fact, discipline of ANY kind does not come naturally to most humans. It must be learned and preferably at an early age. Those who do not learn it early in life may or may not ever learn it.
