I hope they are able to recover some of it and catch the thieves.

If I had framed $1,000 notes on my wall, I think I would be keeping my curtains drawn. Not the most secure way to keep a collection but you shouldn't have to keep everything in a safety deposit box at the bank either.

Wow..I feel bad for the guy, but framing all his currency and hanging it on the wall, next to a window? Then he went on vacation for a week and left it there? Not smart at all.

not sure what its like in halifax, but if that story hit the west coast paper the guy would be flooded with so many donations he would make a lottery winner look poor.

i feel for the guy but seriously, if it isn't nailed down or locked up someone is going to steal it.

what I dont get is that serial numbered bills are NOT covered by insurance but untraceable bullion coins are /boggle.

This makes me so angry. I'm from Halifax and was just there. I really feel for him and will be sharing this story (thanks canuck1us) and do hope others who care can help this guy out, maybe reach out in some way (I'll be sending it to the Halifax Regional Coin Club, Atlantic Provinces Numismatic Association, RCNA)... that's just awful. A similar thing happened to my mother-in-law here in NB too a few years ago.

Sad news indeed. For those who do not keep their collections in safety deposit boxes, I am amazed that people just don't opt for coin and currency insurance. Hugh Wood, who advertises in the CN Journal and Canadian Coin News, can offer up to $50,000 insurance coverage for about $300 per year for coin and currency collections. You even get a discount if you are a RCNA member.

It is even more mind-boggling that most coin dealers do not carry insurance when traveling with their inventory.

This is very sad and unfortunately, I suspect that the thieves will turn out to have known the victim. Sadly, collecting is something that is best kept a secret because you never know who is listening and thinks they can make a quick buck. The reality is, where to you sell or spend a collection (collector coins or old currency) without drawing attention. I mean, wouldn't it be easier to steal and sell electronics?

I looked into insurance for my collection on my home owners policy but it required an independent appraisal which I think is a huge logistical hassle. I choose to go with safe deposit for that reason.

Thanks SPP for the lead on RCNA insurance. That looks like it is worth investigating.

Thieves must have been scared away since soo many notes and coins were left behind. All the break ins I've ever investigated all valuable that were able to be carried away by one or two persons were gone!

CC-Ottawa,
I was also insured by H.Woods while in Ontario but they canceled my policy when I moved to Quebec (apparently they do not have an office here and you have to deal with sub-contractor) The funny thing about a new policy in Quebec was that I needed the same apptaisal by an approved company and a $500 file opening fee for the new company to open my file with H.Woods.Go figure this scheme.I since rent safety deposit at the bank but when you are use to have all of it handy it is a pain to go to the bank all the time.
I however would never display my collection for all to see if it represents my life savings for retirement days

Thanks to you who care about the theft of my collection. No one came forward and there was no donation support at all. The collection seems to be gone. I believe the theif didn't know these were not just newly collected bank notes and probably bought bubble gum with it. The person who had the only other key, and saw 5 - 1954 1000.00 was the owner of the property and he was demanding a key. Because there is no direct evidence the cops won't lay charges. He knew I was away,. and he admitted to entering my apt to check for leaks. Yes, check for leaks. There were no leaks and he had to explain how his prints were found inside my apt. 20 years, one person has been inside my apt. Just one and he has nothing to do with this event. 58 years of life is gone.
I thank those who cared enough to support me with the comments. thank you, and it is interesting to note what wasn't taken. Like a new pc, and a Sony receiver , both new and all the other electronics untouched. So the only other person to have access and knowledge about the collection was him. So now I am carring a 16 grand debt load with no assets to cover it and can't work due to fibromyalgia and spinal arthitis. Nothing has been recovered. This person allowed someone to take away all the finances I had in this world and is still walking around feeling untouchable. He has enough that he could have bought what he wanted but instead chose to steal it from a person who gets 527.00 a month on disability. I can only hope, what go's around, comes around and it costs the theifs dearly. Thank you all for caring. mark mccrae

also for those who are posting on this, since that happened I had been so scared to just leave home for milk, that I was able to aquire a safe and one heavy enough and bolted down that can't be moved. Walmart has the cheapest prices on their online site. No one came through the windows for I am 50 feet off the ground. The owner was the last person to enter and leave my apt and the cops won't charge him and I have no funds left to hire a lawyer for civil actions. As of this time, not one thing has been found., mark mccree

Thank you Steve. This man, ( and I use the word man lightly ) took everything I had in this world. I was litterly in tears apon returning home and seeing this. While all the cops and the news media were here I was so soaked from sweat, I had to change in to three shirts, then, all of a sudden, my hearing went funny, it suddenly sounded like I was hearing whisper's and I collapased. The holiday was for seeing people who had helped me as a young man of 16. I had no family and was working full time and going to school full time and I got sick. My Dr.'s wife showed up at my door and moved me into their home. The generousity of people who did help me, going back to London Ontario was a mission of thanks. The first holiday in 14 years. And it wasn't a holiday, but a mission. Trying to do the right thing to find these friends again from 1971. I was raised in a Training school in Simcoe Ontario because I was an abandond child at age 11, and the government didn't have a place to put me. At age 16, they opened the door with 20.00 and a bus ticket to London where they found me. This collection was the only thing in this world that was mine, that I put it together. It was an accomplishment. Something I have never had or felt or be able to share with any one. My family now, is myself and three household bunnies. Three of them. Without their effections I would feel the same way as the day I was left alone.
thanks again Steve. mark

Dear Cunack1, I live 50 feet off the ground, so curtains are not useful. Also in 20 years, I have only allowed two people in my home. One friend who keeps checking on me because of health and the other, that darn landlord who personally had the only other key to my home and saw the 5 - 1954 1000. bank notes before I left on holiday. In 20 years here, I cannot tell you the name of any one living in this building and the area I live in is mid class who are finishing University and or getting ready to buy a home. It was a very safe place, was. mark

Dear Chequre,,,,,,,,, when the news hit about the theft and posting the information on ebay, I got a number of calls from Associations from around the world telling me they were posting the serial numbers I did have and would watch for them forever. I was so moved that they had seen and would help. The police sure are of no help.
