I was wondering about some thoughts on a recent purchase I made. I have a buddy that has collected coins over the years and he asked me if I would be interested in buying his collection. He is asking $350 for it. Included Morgans: 1888 MS63, 1885 MS 63 GEM, 1887 MS63, 1884 O MS 60,1882 S MS 63, 1921 MS60, 1836 VF20 Liberty Half, 1723 Colonial Hibernia 1/2 cent type 2, 1849 large cent, Caesar Coin, 1853 Half Dime with arrows, 1853 seated liberty with arrows VG, Franklin half PR 1959, 1928 VG Peace dollar, 1926 and 1930 Standing Liberty quarter, 1942 Mercury dime AU 58, about 30 proof P,N,D,Q, about 20 VG- F Franklin halves, about 30 errors that are all pennies ( includes 40% or great off centers and some broad strikes all taken from mint bags before circulated) 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 proof sets and a 2003 silver proof set. And last, 1976 Bicentennial proof set. Whats your thoughts? I think I have $150 in two coins by itself.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it was a good deal but wasnt sure. Another question I have is, I hear all the time where proof sets can be worth more broken apart if you went coin by coin in value, what are your thoughts of doing this with any of the dates I listed?

I dont really collect proof sets so others will be of more help than I. If you buy them I would love to see pics of the Hibernia and the Bust Half. Also, you may want to ask a Mod. to move this to the main coin forum you will get a lot more reads there.

The 1928 Peace dollar (assuming it is the Philadelphia coin) is worth close to $350 all by itself. Great deal indeed. Maybe you should consider paying a little more if he's a particularly good friend. And,

Given the times and the needs of your friend to sell: 1) Agree on a price 2) Toss in an extra 5 or 10 with the words, "Thanks, and to make me feel better here is a little extra." You will both walk away from the deal feeling good. And you will remain friends.

And, if you have already agreed to a sale, treat him to a dinner or a few beers. Say, "Thank you for the opportunity to give your coins a new home." DO NOT lose the friendship. In the end, more important than the coins.
