I believe it might go by the weight of the coin. If there is something on the coin or a chunk is missing then it will reject thinking it is a foreign coin. Weight is the biggest thing with Coinstar machines. If a coin is too heavy or too light it will get rejected. Silver composition dimes, quarters, and 90% halves are about 10% heavier than their clad counterparts. This is why you often find silver dimes and quarters (and occasionally halves), but very rarely nickels (35% Silver War Nickels weigh exactly the same as regular composition nickels). Proof coins also usually get rejected, but I'm not 100% positive of the reason yet - could be the rims are too high. CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! I get a bit excited when I see just a couple coins in the tray that include dimes and/or quarters (hoping for a random silver), but no luck yet.
