While browsing the local thrift shop I came across these two books. A 1964 Blue book and a 1979 Red. They were in almost perfect condition for their ages. Price was .25 cents each. Whats interesting reading especially in the 1964. Only 4 Morgans were as high as $150.00. All the rest were under $100.00 and that is in Uncirculated which was the highest grade in the book.. The big stunner was $20 St. Gaudens gold coins averaging $44.00. In the 1979 Red Book same $20 coins going for $800 or more. Will have to keep my eyes open for more at the shops. edgman

Nice! I love picking these too. I think my oldest Red Book found so far is from 1962, and the Bluebook somewhere around the same time. I can't seem to pass these up when I get them for a buck or less.

You will love this! In 1964 "1903O Morgan" in XF $5.00 and Unc $8.00. The '03S is $35.00 in Unc. In 1979 the "1903o" is $75.00 in MS 60 and the '03s is $1850.00. What happened to the '03o. Right now its at about $400.00 in MS60. I've been trying to get one in a lower grade for 2 years now but they dont seem to be readily available in lower grades.

The 1903-O used to be one of the hardest to get until a whole bunch were released from storage. Must have been pre 64.

I've had opportunities to pick up really old Red Books, but they wanted $10 or more apiece. It's intersting to look at prices from different years and do that "what if" in your head- what if I loaded up on 1916-D Mercury dimes back in 1950?

mycrob You mean the 1916-D that was $40.00 in Fine in the '64 Blue Book or $300.00 in the '79 Red Book. edgman

I have a couple of old Canadian Coin guides my dealer was throwing out, and I laugh at the fact that in 1960, NFLD half dollars were only worth just over their face value in melt. I wonder how many people caught on?

I used to see the older Red Books at flea markets all the time but not lately. I suspect since the Red Book now lists all the possibly prices of the older books themselves, people are looking for them as if they were coins. In the latest edition, page 418, some of the eariest editions are listed in the hundreds of dollars. I too search Salvation Army, Goodwill stores, used book stores for them too.

Dont bother searching all the Thrift Shops around the Eastern Shore of DE. I spent the last two days seaching everyone I could. Wife wants to know why I like going to the Thrift Shops now when she couldnt get me to go before. Didnt find squat! Goes to show you that if your looking for something you will never find it.
