It is the ugliest thing you can do to a coin makes me want to vomit everytime I see it. And heck half the time the coloring job is glaring I want to find the person who thought it was a good idea and beat them with a stick. I was looking for a Silver Eagle for my type set and I went to two pawn shops near my work (figured you might find a really good Eagle in a Pawn shop at spot versus the coin shop that is going to charge a small premium on them). And the only one they had a was ized colored Eagle arghhhhhhh

It's a marketing ploy for people who dont actually collect coins. I agree, it's annoying too.

People colorize coins because to them it makes them prettier and less boring. I don't care for colorized coins but there is a market for them and I have bought and sold a couple. They are harder to sell so unless they are greatly discounted I doubt I'll ever buy any more to sell. Quote: (figured you might find a really good Eagle in a Pawn shop at spot versus the coin shop that is going to charge a small premium on them) Typically pawn shops charge more than coin shops for coins but there are exceptions. Coin dealers also have to pay the premium for the silver eagles when buying from their wholesaler. Retail the premium is usually $3.00 to $4.00 over spot. Ed ANA LM-3175

Yea spot is $33 right now, coin shop told me $40 for the Eagle, part of the reason I was also hoping for a pawn shop is there is some close to work I can hit on a 10 minute break where the coin shop is a 15 minute drive each way with terrible hours of 10-5 M-F meaning I use my whole lunch hour to buy stuff there.

Some folks are drawn to garish colorizations... if they're done well I appreciate them, but wouldn't collect them or invest in them unless (as others have said) I could get a good deal on them for silver value. I just prefer the simple elegance of the un-"enhanced" ASE. sirdizzy, you should be able to find a bullion shop around that will sell you an ASE for $3-4 over spot.

I wouldent mind owning one of those silver eagles as a novelty, I think the one with the gold color nice looking, and it still has the 1 oz silver content. It just isn't as nice to stack in bulk in my opinion

I would support colorization of some pieces IF it could be done without the result looking like a two-bit --for example, a gentle flesh-tone on presidents' faces, proper hair colour, etc. Unfortunately, the way I see this in my head looks kind of like controlled toning, and I don't know how you'd even begin to do that.

The Aussie coin looks cool. The colored ASE looks like a lady in a flag carrying parsley.
