I collect US coins but I do some coin roll hunting for Lincoln cents. I've been putting aside the Canadian cents I have been finding (~120+ so far, from 1949-2010). I figured I had enough to start filling an album. I went to a monthly coin show in New Jersey (USA) and one of the things on my list was a Canadian Small Cents album or folder. I found an antique dealer (not a coin dealer) and he had what looked like a brand new Whitman Canadian Small Cents Album. I opened it to check it out and it was mostly full, missing the dates 1922-1927,29,30,54 (I have the 54) and 58. I would say the coins are in VG to Fine for the older dates, and better from the later 70's. I picked up these 67 coins and almost brand new album for $12.00. Considering the price of a new Whitman album, I thought it was a good deal. I know almost nothing about Canadian cents. Now looks like a good time to educate myself. Are there any good online sites for Canadian small cent prices and varieties? I think this dealer also had loose Candadian cents but the larger pre-1920's stuff. Any sites for these would also bee appreciated. Thanks.

The 1929 is a common date you should be able to get for dollar or less in decent shape. The 1930 is about 3 dollars or so and the 1922,23,24,25,26 are keys about 70-100 bucks the lot a 1927 is also about 1-2 dollars. Have fun you got a good deal on a starter set of small cents!

Thanks. I have gone through the set and the mixed bag of cents found from my CRH. I noticed there are quite a few varieties. Found a few of them in my mixed bag, such as doubled dates. Quite a few things to look out for with Canadian cents. I also look forward in finding those more rare coins from the 20's in order to fill this book.

there is also a 1929 variety that sells for a good amount, google "1929 canadian penny/cent high 9". coinsandcanada.com is a good reference for varieties, but like all "book values" there are not actually worth that amount. ebay completed listing searches will give you a way better idea of value.

I already checked the 1929, and it is the low variety.

Thanks for the info. I will check it out now. For the George VI pics, those are the cents from 1932-1952. Correct?

George VI are the coins from 37-52. Before that is George VII which had a different design.

Yes I see it now. I didn't quite understand how the Whitman album marked the George variety change. Next time I will look at the coins!

I would have paid $12 for that any day. The album new probably costs more than that...

Yes, I was surprised when he said $12.00 (I was expecting a $30-40 dollar asking price). He said "$12.00, the album is worth more but what the hell". One of the few times I haggle the price. I did however ghink the potential repeat customer helped.rab a few worn V-Nickels which I also bought, and asked him for some political buttons (he was selling some) which he didn't have with him and he said he would bring the next time. I was at that same show and may have passed right over that set!! Was it in the small room with the coin supplies dealer? Lucky you because I would have snatched that baby up had I seen it first. And all of the Pre 1920 Large Cents too.. I already have a Canada Small cent set missing only the 1922-1927, But seriously I would have paid $12 just for the album. I need to know something, is it the actual Whitman Bookshelf series kinda looks like the Classic series but thinner. Or is it a folder. I know the old Bookshelf album only goes up to like the 60s. And as far as I knew Whitman does not make an Album that covers the set from 1920 to present.

Yes it was in the small room; the antiques dealer across from the coin supply tables. It runs from 1920 to 1989, and the copyright date says 1989. The item no. is 9151. It is a three page Whitman album. The cover says Canadian Small cents 1920- (no end date). The gold text on the side, top says Whitman Classic. I'm going to rummage around that dealers table next month. Lots of loose coins with no order whatsoever.I did see lots of Buffalo and V-Nickels and foreign coins. I'm not sure if he had pre-1920 cents from Canada. There were 4 or 5 boxes of mixed foreign. I noticed some big sized cents. There were definitely those larger cents from the UK in the mix. I'll get some pics up later today after my cameras battery charges. Needless to say, I'm glad I got to the table before you did. If you are going to the show next month let me know. Maybe we can meet up for a quick hello. I would also like to know which foreign coin dealers at the show would have the missing Canadian cents that I need.

Awesome, I was on the hunt for large Pennies both Canada and UK.. I did stop by that table all I saw was a pile of worn Buff's, and a small box of foreign stragglers. You definitely got to him before I did. I asked him how much for each and he said it depends which ones, anywhere from 50 cents to a couple bucks. But none of it looked appealing enough to look through. His table looked like something at a swap meet. Like you said, no order what so ever. It kind of put me off, but looking back now I should of had a closer look. I don't know specifically who at that show had Canada key date cents. But there were a bunch of tables with books and boxes full of world stuff. I found one guy directly to the right by the main room entrance, with a boat load of Large Canada and UK pennies. I think I cleaned him out at 50 cents to $1 per coin Maybe we'll meet up. Next month I may do that show and another big one in White Plains,NY. And there's the monthly World show in Clifton I might go to also. I think its next weekend, they might have some of the Canada key dates there.
