Just curious to know if I am being foolish when buying so called, un-searched shotgun rolls of wheat pennies on ebay, any thoughts?

No such thing as "unsearched" wheats on ebay. You will get the "highlight" on the end, and the rest will be mainly common 40's-50's wheats. I would just save the money you would spend on these, and buy something you actually would want overall.

Unless its from an Estate sale, I'm not sure there is such a thing as an "unsearched" roll anymore. Especially the ones on ebay with a 1909 wheat or IHC showing. Many of the good finds come from roll searching, when an heir to a relative goes through a house, and not wanting to take the time to look at a number of coins, just takes them to the bank.
I bought a bag of 5000 going on ten years ago, and was satisfied with what I can away with then. Don't think I will do it again.
GOOD LUCK.

Save your money and buy specific coins you want. The vast majority of these are not unsearched.

Unsearched by the idiot who buys it, not unsearched by the seller

How do they have them in shotgun rolls? They probably have their own machines. Or these are from estate sales and they really do not have time to go through them all. I am a bit gullible but I did find 4 Indian heads in one roll, one being an 1881 and an 1882. No diamonds though

I'm usually good for an opposing opinion :) I agree that if you're going to look for unsearched on ebay, you will get ripped 99% of the time. 'Unsearched can mean many different things to a person trying to justify ripping people off. That said, I have found exactly 1, Uno, one, guy I believe was selling unsearched. I still recommend not buying, but if you are going to buy, read the comments by people who have already purchased from that seller.

Click on the seller's name, find his feedback, then look specifically at his feedback as a seller. It's a good idea to do this before buying anything on ebay.
