I just upgraded my circulated Lincoln Cent and Jefferson nickel collections from Harris folders to Whitman Classic albums. Yeah, I know, about time I put my big boy pants on. Anyway, the Harris folders have holes for P, D, and S (for years that coins were minted for circulation at the San Francisco mint). However the Whitman Classic albums have additional slots for Proof-only issues, meaning that there are holes for years that SF minted a proof but not a business strike. For some reason unknown to me, no one generally likes to differentiate multiple releases from the same mint in the same year. Clearly it would be nearly impossible to collect the modern S-mint coins from circulation. And I don't have to fill every hole if that's what makes the most sense, but holes in albums bother me. So I ask you, dear readers, what's the best way to fill those proof-only holes? Since these are circulated collections, the proofs don't have to be pristine. Thanks for your advice!

Purchase them from ebay. If condition doesn't matter, just find the cheapest you can.

If you need anything else from the sets I would probably just chop mint sets and sell the rest of spend it. I'm sure you could probably find what you need from people here as well and of course theres always the local dealer or ebay route. If you go the ebay route try and find someone that has a lot of what you need then you can save a lot with the combined shipping EDIT: I probably misunderstood what you were asking with my first response. I now believe you were asking what quality of proof for a circulated album. If a pristine proof would bother you looking our of place I would suggest using them all as a pocket piece for a little bit and circulate them up then put them in the album

There may be some proof coins (then called impaired proofs) in the wild, but you are right that it would be nearly impossible to fill from circulation. You can either fill them with impaired proofs or varieties or errors or whatever makes you less sad about the empty holes.

1. At most coin shows there are dealers that break up sets just to sell to people that want to fill those holes. Usually much cheaper than through the mail 2. I'd keep away from places on line for just those types of coins. Usually way over priced and then your on their mailing list. 3. If it bothers you just check out the size, go to a hardware store and purchase washers of the same size. Put those in there instead. 4. If there is a Harbor Fright place near you, they sell all sorts of washers made of all sorts of stuff. I recently purchased a box of assorted Copper washers from them. 5. To save money, just put a normal, circulated coin in those holes facing the opposite direction. 6. Look for Blue paper of the approximate same color as the Album. Cut out small circles and fill those slots with that. 7. Using the cover only, purchase additional blank pages from Whitman or a Whitman supplier. Then get those press on number/letters from Whitman and make your own Album leaving out things like the 22 plain, 55 doubled die, 72 doubled die, all proofs and anything else you dislike. I made one like this for Lincoln Cents and only places for normal issues.

To me, you have 2 choices, just my opinion... 1: Buy a different album without the "proof only" holes. OR 2: Go on a mission to buy up and/or find circulated proofs for the holes! That sounds like fun to me. Find circulated proofs for sale on ebay and such. Roll seachers often find impaired proofs in circulation, and I am sure some end up for sale, for you to fill your holes. It would certainly be a unique album filled that way.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Good suggestions. I'm too tired to reply to each of you but I'll do so tomorrow when I can think straight.
