Hello, I just purchased a Twenty Cent Piece on ebay the other day without really studying the coin as carefully as I should have. It is one of the last coins for completing a 7070 album filled with problem-free VF+ coins (with the exception of one Seated dollar, and a classic large cent, with most AU and BU.) I saw superficially that the coin has nice details, and a full liberty (more than can be said for a lot of these coins that I've seen for sale.) And it was advertised as "XF+ Original Uncleaned" Here is the coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1875-S-TWEN...p=true&rt=ncWith ebay's zooming feature, I am now noticing little holes and dents on the obverse which I actually didn't notice before I place a bid. What do you think, is this in fact a problem coin? I am not in the habit of returning coins, but this seller (with 100% feedback) does offer a 14 day return option. Thanks

Pictures will only tell so much. I would wait till you have the coin in hand and then see how you feel about it.

That coin is, in my mind, pretty darn well bought.

I don't see anything out of line for a lightly-circulated twenty-center. The marks and scratches do not appear to be related to any cleaning or other deliberate abuse. Color is pleasing and the strike looks better than average based on the sharpness of LIBERTY. Perhaps you could have found a similar coin for a bit less, or another example with similar wear but fewer contact marks for about the same price. If you don't like it when it arrives just send it back and keep looking! No harm, no foul, right?

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Are you planning to have the coin slabbed? If you're looking for choice for the grade, this isn't it. It's less-than-choice for a higher grade, and I don't think it will look at all out of place in a VF+ album.
I second jokingjoker, wait until you get it in hand to make a decision. I think it's a lovely coin and I don't think you did badly at all.

As near as I can tell, the TPG's are pretty generous with this series. Weak strikes are common, and very few below AU have such a strong LIBERTY. The coin you've bought is similar to AU50-53 examples I see in slabs, which makes it a pretty decent buy.

I have to agree with SsuperDave - looks like a pretty nice coin to me and at a very good price. I had a hard time finding one of these for my 7070 and think yours is a pretty nice example if everything turns out well once it is hand.

Thanks - you guys have given me the confidence to wait until the coin arrives before making that call! I thought it might have been porous using ebay's zoom feature, but then again I am not an expert (never even owned a 20 cent piece before.) Hello fellow type collector KenKat - that's a very nice circulated set that you have there, may I ask how long it took you to assemble and also how much you spent on it? Mine is a bit higher grade than that but certainly not like Bryan who has set the standard on this forum with his beautiful complete set of mostly cracked out pieces (including gold.) And I've still got 3 holes left (and they are moderately difficult to find in better grade.) Also, I was wondering how you and others are taking quality photos of the entire set (the coins are so small that I'd imagine getting the focus right to display all of the details on each coin is a skillful task.)

Put your mind at ease. Those obverse issues are very minor and do not make it a problem coin in any way. The seller's grade of XF+ seems accurate and the price paid is fair.

I like the look of this coin. It also seems to be a fair price. Interesting to note, the description at the bottom of the listing refers to a 1876 Dime. Let us know how it looks when you get it in hand.

Hi Coins4fun -
It took me around 2 and a half years or so to put together my 7070. I completed it a couple of years ago maybe. The 20 cent piece was one of the harder and last coins to go in the album. Just couldn't find one I liked.
I think I have around $3800 in my set - I made some good buys so I think it it worth more than that currently.
I just used a basic Canon point and shoot on a tripod with the macro mode on and used the shutter timer to minimize shaking. Spent lots of time getting the lighting correct too. Not perfect pictures but they'll do!

I think you did good. I think EF-45 would be a reasonable estimate.

Thanks for sharing your set KenKat, looks like you did quite well. And also a shout out to Bryan, who has a truly awesome set by any standard. I have some nicer pieces, probably more than half AU/BU with VF+ being the lower limit, but still about 6 coins are way below standard, including a hideous draped bust cent which will cost a lot to upgrade. Also, I am still 2 coins away from completion but they are not the coins that one might expect (An early Seated half dollar, and a Shield nickel (With Rays.) ) I am also looking to represent each of the Branch Mints (D,S,O,CC) within the set. By the time the set is complete and upgrades are made, I'm afraid the total cost of the set will be closer to 10K than I would have liked. Therefore, after the fun is over I may have the better coins sent for grading and sold.
