Hope someone can help. I purchased a 2008 China G150Y Ollympics - Archery, PF70 Ultra Cameo from MCA in Apri of this year. While searching ebay today, I find MCA selling the exact same coin with the picture showing my serial number. Called them, they told me the listing I was looking at was an old one and not to worry. Somewhat relieved, I went back and looked again. Listing is active for same coin with same serial number. I understand the use of stock photos but my cynical side is worried. Are they selling a coin exactly like the one sold me (same serial)? I called them back again, now, voice mail continuously. I left a message but has anyone got any ideas. Would you belive the stock photo story I am sure to get?

to CCF!

I found their listing and it is the same picture. I am still unclear on ebay's stock photo rule - but how can it be a stock photo if you own this?

They state:

Quote:
All items pictured are the actual items you will receive unless we have duplicates or if the picture is a representation of a "lot" of items, in which case this will always be stated.

Oh wise ebay sellers on CCF, what do you think? Kosher or are they skirting the rules?

Reached MCA and talked to ebay Manager. Seems that the listing is wordy at best..

The picture is the coin they sold me back in April. They say they use it as a stock photo. When I told them their ad says the one you see is the one you get, they told me this is only when we dont have duplicates. Really?

So, since they have other 2008 Beijing Archery coins, they consider this modern coin a duplicate, therefore there statement in the ad meets its criteria. What do you all think?

I believe I have an original, I dont think they are selling coins with identical serials but I also do not think the wording on the ad is correct. If I was the new buyer and coin #141 showed up instead of #140, I would ask questions. They told me they get very few complaints on this.

I suggested they change the wording on the ad so we dont believe we are getting one thing when we in fact get another. It seemed trivial to them I think, like I was over reacting. They were not rude, just seemed a bit tired of me and I am the one who wasted my time on the phone this morning.

In the end, I am a little disappointed in the set up, I dont want my coins serial number put out there, unless I put it out there. Seems fair as I own the coin. Time to move on I guess...

Comments?

Stock photos are not allowed.

We'll see if PNG Dealers are above the law....

At least you know you probably got the best looking one they had in that grade as it is the one they chose to photograph as a stock photo. I agree this stock photo should be told to the buyers instead of this will be the one you receive and then its not the one you receive if they have more just like it, all coins graded the same are not of equal quality. I see they still have it listed and it says this

Quote:
All items pictured are the actual items you will receive unless we have duplicates or if the picture is a representation of a "lot" of items, in which case this will always be stated.

But yet I do not see anywhere in their listing that says this is a stock photo

Good point.

Frankly, curnvs, I wouldn't be too awful worried about it. I would not doubt the serial to be unique - Modern Coin Mart ain't going there, they're too reputable - and if you got scubu to stick his nose into it, that auction is likely history.

And if ebay goes ahead and allows a PNG dealer to use stock photos, well, we'll call Laura Sperber.

the seller should just blurr out the serial number if they are going to use the same picture for multiple coins of the same grade.

What comes to mind here is the quote from the old TV series "The X Files" --- "Trust no one."

You obviously caught them with their pants down around their ankles. At the absolute least, they're in clear violation of the so-called "stock photo rule" (if that's all), so they're quite humiliated by getting caught in the act. What they've done is beyond argument, their purported integrity has taken a solid hit and the sea water is rushing in through the hole in their hull. They presently need some serious high-speed damage control and they're highly motivated to do or say whatever it takes to save face here. I believe right now they'd say or do literally anything to get this altogether too-public embarrassment to go away.

In fact, I'm confident they'd even quote the late Richard Milhous Nixon, who when under extreme duress once said "I'm not a crook."

Integrity is kind of like virginity - once you throw yours away, it's kind of difficult to get it back.

If I was in your position, I wouldn't be putting any stock in anything they said to me right now.

Thanks for reporting these listings to us.

I reviewed these listings and confirmed that they violated our Selling Currency policy. As a result, I sent your report to the seller's account manager for action.

Hayden here from ModernCoinMart, I spoke to you yesterday on the phone. I appreciate what you've pointed out and I apologize for any confusion we caused you. We will take a look at re-wording our stock photo language to be more concise.

I would also like to point that all images we take, even after the coin is sold, remain the property of ModernCoinMart.

Thank you,

Hayden

Rewording? I'm curious why you even think you're allowed stock photos in the first place. I'm not, why should you be? Plain as day in the coin selling rules.

I've been reading and learning here for a long time, but I had to register to post in this topic. Moderncoinmart, I don't understand why you think you can use stock photos anyway. Everyone knows that we are supposed to "buy the coin, not the slab." This is not possible if you are using stock photos. There is a reason why stock pictures are not permitted in the Coins category. Why should the rules be different for you?

"Rewording" = DAMAGE CONTROL = SAVING FACE. You're caught and you have no excuse.
