I go picking on weekends, but in my neck of the woods, it's very rare to bink precious metals, so I mostly pick up stuff to flip to turn into PMs.

That being said, I really need one of you to bring me back down to reality and tell me that I'm wrong, because I'm kinda going nuts here.

I picked this up to look at it:

Someone-Bring-Me-Back-Down-To-Reality....

I flipped it over:

Someone-Bring-Me-Back-Down-To-Reality....

I guess not. It was like 10am by then anyway, no way silver would stay out that long without being spotted.

But for whatever reason I decided to open it up and look inside:

Someone-Bring-Me-Back-Down-To-Reality....

It can't be, can it?

I paid $3 and brought it home and it has passed all my acid tests... It's too late to take it to a local place that has a spectrometer, so I'm kinda just sitting here fidgeting.

I couldn't have found 45 troy ounces of silver for $3 today, right? Has to be my imagination?

Someone set me straight and tell me it's only passing the tests cause it's plated, and that 900 inside isn't a hallmark. I don't know if I can wait 'til morning for confirmation. ;)

I'm sorry but that thing is ugly. I surprised they didn't pay you just to take it away.

It should be melted down just to put it out its misery.

On first glance I would have yeld plated junk, but that 900 mark and acid test are most intriqing....

Not that un-common for sterling silver to be marked other then .925, esp in Europe.....

The 2000 stamp and 10th anniversy and December 10th may hold the answer....

Or more so that ODD stamp of what appears to be a clever grouping of letters, TBC prhaps with the T turned sideways....

Research that stamp in google and maybe if you can find its origins you can get more info on what they make etc....

I'm hoping you have the real deal. This makes me want to pay a visit to my local antique stores.

Is there any "trick" to determinng sterling silver on the spot other than simply inspecting for a mark of purity?

Well Berk if it says "Rodgers brothers" run 180 degrees in the opposite direction, lol....

All silver can tarnish but not of the likes of plated junk where a trained eye can spot from a distance....

I used to work at a coin shop which bought sterling flatware and silver ware....

The gold kiosk in which I currently work part time does not buy sterling and fails to see the value in it as they ae blinded like most by gold lol....

It appears to me that you have a very nice piece of .900 Coin Silver on your hands that can be converted into a nice short stack of bars and rounds. I say congrats to you.

As long as your acid tests are good you are golden with this one. I've found that if it's not marked sterling and/or 925 most "pickers" don't have a clue. Some of my best silver finds have been hallmarked 800, 830, 900, etc. I've also scored big with gold that was marked 333, 585, or 750.
