Hi all, I guess it's just a day for errors.

Markn & PurplePenny, may be of interest to you two.

Below is a link for a double struck $1 coin.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Error-One-D...em3ccd171332

It's hit a high price already. with over 7 days to go.

From a seller with extremely low feedback.
...but...
Although this seller sold one of the 2009 $2 double strikes a little while back...http://www.ebay.com/itm/26112745347...ig_cvip=true

Hmm...what do we think? An insider?

I posted this one on another forum and someone pointed out the second strike is the same size. It had me fooled, I too thought it was larger. Its a nice coin thats for sure!

I'm certainly no 'insider' on Australian errors, but why does the second strike look rougher--roos, legends, queen's hair? This is not what I would expect to see.

They look like fake die struck errors to me. The aecond strike on each coin is grainy and weak. The second strike often has some types of design distortions on genuine errors due to metal flow, but nothing like what is seen on these two coins.

Did anyone notice this sold for AUD$2,338.99?
The seller had sold another in November--with the same grainy second strike--what's the chance of that?

The seller sold a double struck $2 in November. $2 double strikes (while not common) are quite well known. We wrote an article about them a while back:

I'm no expert on Aussie errors, but I don't understand why the second strike on that auction has much less sharpness.
In that detail, they don't resemble the double strikes I see on US coins or other countries.

The immediate theory I have for the significantly different second strike is due to AlBr (the material Australian dollar coins are made out of) work hardening very easily. The second strike is mushy because a higher striking pressure would be needed after the first strike. The first strike of course work hardens the coin. The $2 double strikes look quite similar and I've handled several of those.

It's also possible that the coin is not an accidental error, but rather is "mint sport". The second strike may have been applied deliberately by mint staff having a bit of fun.

It does look fake, kind of like those fake error club medals.

it looks as if the guy chopped a bit off of the first coin and welded the second and did a poor sanding job

Here it is in all it's beautiful dollary glory. It's slightly thinner on the doubled edge as you would expect. I have no doubt in my mind that it's genuine but was it a malfunction of the press mid production run or the handi-work of someone on the inside? My guess is the latter. What markn said above about the hardness is probable but my guess was that the second strike occurred later and not even from the same die -note the die cracks evident on the second strike and not the first. We can also see the date which is cool, makes it more valuable.
