I went to a small local bank today and asked if I could get boxes of half dollars ordered. I was told that only customers with commercial accounts could order boxes of halves. According to the teller, one particular business customer isn't a collector but orders boxes of halves. A rather unpleasant head teller was becoming annoyed with my questions so I didn't ask anything else and left. Does anybody know why a modern commercial enterprise would want or need to order small quantities of half dollars for business purposes?

Slot Machine Businesses potentially. Only example of a company who would have a need for them for older slot machines in my opinion.

Why not? I ordered half dollars and two dollar bills once for my part time job's petty cash stash. They got a good laugh out of it, but told me not to do it again.

I run a pond supply store and get halves, dollar coins and $2 bills from my bank each week to give out in change. Most customers loves getting them in change, and frequently ask if I can change some of their other bills for these.

There may be a legit reason for a business to order halves, but I can't think of one. Teller may be pulling your leg, or doesn't know any better.

It would have to be a business that sells a lot of product that ends in .50 Many years ago in high school I worked at a car wash, the price of a wash was $4.50. We used to give out a half dollar in change to ever customer.

Quote: I was told that only customers with commercial accounts could order boxes of halves. Most likely because commercial accounts generate more revenue for the bank than personal accounts. Ordering boxes of coins represents a fixed cost to the bank and they incur another cost if they were to receive the coins back from a personal customer after searching. Coins distributed to a business would almost never be returned in bulk to the bank. Have you tried to order boxes of any other denomination? I cannot imagine a policy like that only applying to half dollar boxes and nothing else.

What am I fistfulladirt, chopped liver? I am a small business. I get halves from the bank every week to give out in change. I know of at least two other businesses locally that do the same. I like to think I inspired them. I don't have to order the halves specially as I've been getting them every week for 5 years and the bank knows to get them for me. If for any reason I miss a week, they get worried about me. Yes, I search the halves as I put them in the till.

"You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar." I have a "student" checking account with my local BofA. As of tonight, I have less than $18 in the account. I routinely buy boxes of halves from this branch. Heck, 99% of the time I'm in there buying coin, I don't even have to swipe my card to do so. Most of the tellers know me. This branch of BofA is the largest merchant branch in the area. They do a lot of coin transactions. I was perfectly honest with them when I opened my account. "I'm a coin collector, I search through boxes looking for coins that I need to fill holes in my albums." Every once in awhile, I bring in a box of donuts or a bag of candy... *hint hint* I brought my 7070 with me once...and handed it to the vault-manager...and let her show it off to a few of the tellers that weren't helping other customers at the moment... The 1/2 cents and the large cents attracted the most attention...

I know of a small local business around my area that frequently orders halves (locally-owned independent burger joint) for change. When I was frequently searching halves the bank that supplies the burger place was always happy to take my rejects, as it saved them from ordering halves for them.

Haven't heard of a business in my area ordering halves, I have had dealings with more than a half dozen banks and CU's for five years now, fairly tight relationships. I commend you for ordering those halves...but you say you search those halves first? Chopped liver it is!

Retailers that order halves know that many non collectors look at them as novelties and they'll remember where they got them from. Same is true for $2 bills and Presidential dollars. Try spending some and look at the reaction you get from non-collectors. Sounds like the bank you were at is one I would no longer deal with. If they are already ordering halves for retail customers, there is no reason why they couldn't add a couple boxes in their FED order for you as a good will gesture for a customer.

I agree with IndianGoldEagle. I would consider them as my new dump bank.
