Just picked up this beautiful BU large cent - 1845.

Thoughts on grade and variety?

Wow that's beautiful. Hard to tell about possible reverse wear with the plastic glare-- is there some wear on the leaf veins? If not, maybe this is MS, maybe even high MS?

The relief is fantastic and the fields are so smooth. Could this be a proof?

Sorry, bad light and the pics make it look like wear. Not a trace of wear on this coin.

Proofs are vanishingly rare for this date - Heritage has never offered one. Highly unlikely.

I've seen coloring like this on later Large Cents; doesn't seem too untoward. I'm worried about that circle on the cheek, though.

Ok, let me try this again. I took these pics with my Ipad in the best light I can come up with.

I have to say, this coin is absolutely STUNNING to look at in hand! I spent big bucks on this coin because I fell in love with it in hand. No pics I could take will do it justice.

That orange hue you see is reflective and lustrous (red)!

Nice coin but yeah the color looks off to me as well. Not sure it's not AT but toning is coming back naturally again MS63/4BN maybe - someday?

Strike is above average, with mostly complete star radials and strong complete denticles on both sides. The blunt leaves above E in ONE are likely strike weakness; I have an 1857 large cent certified MS64BN by NGC with similar weakness.

Color on high-grade copper is critically important for value. I would only consider paying "big bucks" for a coin like this if it were certified as problem-free by NGC or preferably PCGS. I just don't trust my ability to detect processed surfaces/recoloring. The difference between an MS-64RB grade (which this coin might deserve) and an "MS Details, Recolored" judgment will be many hundreds of dollars in potential value.

Are you planning to have this coin certified? I would, and I'd be biting my nails the whole time, hoping for a problem-free grade.

For the money you said you spent, invest a bit more and get it certified. I also think the coloring is questionable.
If you want, I could post your pics on the EAC forum and get some feedback for you.

I looked at the first pics & thought recolored. The second set of pics look better but there still appears to be something funky going on with the coloring. Then again, if your photo skils are on a par with mine the coin could be perfectly fine.

I'm sorry, but your coin is without question circulated, retoned and likely polished. There is absolutely no doubt that the coin has been heavily manipulated and retains no original skin or surfaces. If you submit it then the coin will receive a details only holder each and every time from every grading service.

I recently purchased a Large Cent quite similar to this coin. It was in a newer ANACS holder and described "AU50 Cleaned"

No clue about these either, but to me it looks like it was lightly oiled not polished but Has like a sealed look to it, hope I'm wrong, cause it is a very nice piece
