Yeah I know it's 10+ months away, but after looking at so many coins this last month some ideas popped into my head and I know what I'm going to be next year... Lady Liberty a la Morgan dollar. So easy! Make a phrygian cap with the appropriate adornments, make a tiara/band with "LIBERTY", slap a year on my neck, paint on some die cracks for whichever VAM has the most face/neck findings, and voila. My hair is already much like the Morgan dollar.

And hey, any wheelchair-bound women on CCF who want a good costume? Every time I see a Seated Liberty I think of wheelchair. Just make a liberty shield, attach it over a wheel, wear a drapey gown, and carry that little flagpole thing. What is at the end of that flagpole, anyway? I never really looked closely. I assumed it was a flag but after looking at a completely drool-worthy proof on ebay just now (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pattern-186...m2c6a1527ad) it seems to be something else, maybe another phyrgian cap? Guess I should read more about Seated Libs, the artwork, and their history.

Anyhoo, Halloween 2013. Morgan dollar. Yeah. Plenty of time to pick the best VAM for the costume, something with a crack on the cheek or other findings on the face or neck. For you VAMers, feel free to make suggestions since I'm not yet very familiar with the vast array of VAMs.

. That's a great idea for a costume - we will need pics!

BTW - Wikipedia ...

Quote:
The basic obverse design of the Seated Liberty coinage consisted of the figure of the goddess Liberty clad in a flowing dress and seated upon a rock. In her left hand, she holds a Liberty pole surmounted by a Phrygian cap, which had been a pre-eminent symbol of freedom during the movement of Neoclassicism (and in fact traces its roots back to Ancient Greece and Rome). Although it had fallen out of favor in Europe by 1830, Neoclassicism remained in vogue in the United States until after the American Civil War. Liberty's right hand rested on the top corner of a striped shield with a diagonal banner inscribed with the word "LIBERTY." The shield represented preparedness in the defense of freedom. The date of the coin appeared on the bottom below Liberty.

You were right. I did not know so looked it up. The whole article is an interesting read.

Next year I will be living with my nieces, and the plan is to convince Maya that she wants to be Alice in Wonderland; I've wanted to do an Alice-themed cosplay since I was ten, and this is the perfect time to break out my new sewing skills and be the Queen of Hearts.

Other options on my list: Diego from Dora the Explorer, Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast, one of the soldiers from Mulan, the Bunny Scout Leader from Ruby and Max. I, erm, am probably going to have to plan my costumes around a child who will of course want to be the star.
