As I imagine many people here do, I look at every coin that comes into my possession in the course of a day, and I deliberately pay with bills so I can get more coins to look at, whether I'm buying a newspaper, a cup of coffee, or what have you.
So yesterday, after buying some coin storage tubes at the coin shop for four bucks and change and paying with a five, it came naturally to me to stand there for a moment checking my change before putting it in my pocket.
And then I was struck by how silly I must look: How likely is it that a coin dealer is going to hand you something in change that's significant or worth more than face value?
But now I'm wondering: Has anyone ever bought something at a coin shop and received a nice "bonus" in change? Some silver or a hard-to-find variety or something along those lines that the sales clerk missed?

I haven't received anything too interesting in change, but the couple of coin shops I frequent always gives out Kennedy halves in change.

Depends on the dealer... Quote: that the sales clerk missed?
Might not have been missed but might just keep you coming back.....

Many of my coin show dealers will give common wheat cents, half dollars, dollar coins, and two dollar notes in change, especially to the YNs.

I once got an uncirculated 1988 $1 from a dealer. I think someone in the Australian section said they got a nearly 20 year old $5 note in reasonable condition because the dealer didn't have anything else to give as change.
Pretty much always my purchases are rounded to the nearest $5 anyway.

Coin shop I frequent gives out $2 bills, halves, and dollar coins because they come in as part of collections but are worth only face value. I sometimes get really nice nickels from the 60s. The best find: 2 Shield nickels that were worn almost planchet smooth.

The coin shop I usually go to will sometimes give out clad proof quarters or dimes and and will often give out Kennedy halves in change as well. I never really expect to find anything significant from a coin shop, but It has become a habit to check all of my change, so I do it anyway

My dealer just does this because he is a nice guy but most of the time he gives me 50 cent pieces, nickel dollars, $1 and $2 bills or even sometimes bills of the outdated series. These aren't worth more than face value but they never circulate else ware and I can always add them to my collection.

The most interesting thing I've got from the guy in town was a '45 victory nickel. Not much, but still kinda neat to get in change.

I received a 1935 silver certificate that was in decent shape in change at a coin/currency dealer in Cleveland. It was nice to get since you don't see them that often in circulation. I think he got them in a large estate he bought and since they don't command much of a premium he thought it would be fun to give them out in change at his store.

I once received change from the B&M coin shop I frequent. I instinctively checked dates on my change and I was thinking "why am I dong this"; At the same moment I noticed an early Jefferson, 39 or 40, can't remember. I smiled and looked up and the dealer was standing there watching my every move with a big grin on his face. We were just standing there smiling at each other, It was really quite a funny moment. Couple of kids at heart.
