Very scary. I looked it up on NGC's site and it is the same coin (I thought maybe the slab was fake as well).

The lot has been pulled by Heritage. Kudos to them.

The "2" in the date stands out like dogs proverbials that it has been altered. I have been fairly vocal in my objections to slabbed coins but I never imagined that there would be a situation like this where a TPG has slabbed an altered date coin. But it is probably not that surprising. The coin is a real penny, it has just had the date altered. NGC are a US based company so they wouldn't be familiar with fonts and bead counts of the various Australian coins. It makes you wonder about how many other altered date coins have been slabbed and are sitting in peoples collections.

Thats why it's so important to know your stuff, buying slabs is all well & good if you can't grade a coin but you still gotta research to make sure the coin is genuine, whether it's in a slab or raw.
This is very disappointing to see though !

While I think you are being kind, I believe that if a company is going to slab a coin, they better darned will know that an authentic one looks like.

MOR I think you are being too soft on NGC. It doesn't matter that they are US based. They are a 1st tier TPG and should have scores of graders who are experts in various areas of numismatics and presumably at least one of their graders would have a decent knowledge of the pre decimal coins. ESPECIALLY of the key date coins that are prone to alterations (1930 penny, '23 half, Centenary florin). If they screw up on a key date coin then what good are they? Even their guarentee to buy back misgraded coins is of dubious worth as they use their own valuations and for many non US coins they still use valuations that existed back in the 1990's (for example key date Ottoman gold coins that were worth at least 4 times the value of common dates are still listed at the same value of 15 years ago and that is now only bullion value).

Quote: MOR I think you are being too soft on NGC. I'm not making excuses for NGC. I was more trying to point out to Australians who buy slabbed coins that there are no guarantees, even for slabbed coins.

I think you're letting NGC off too easily too. As one of the big 2 they should know better. The 1923 half penny is probably the second most important coin in the entire Australian series and anyone who is grading Australian coins should know of it and be able to pick a genuine example.

NGC should know better--or they shouldn't certify these coins at all. This same coin shows up on NGC's photo "verification".
