So a year or so ago my mother gave me the family hoard.. My gramps them father had wanted it to go to me.. I took all of the US coins she brought out, but left the box of world coins... So the other day I go there for dinner and ask her to grab those and she comes out with that box, a few other smaller boxes and 5 old blue Whitman folders.. I'm like... "Um... What are those?"
And she's like "the stuff you didn't want last year"
...ummmm.... No... I'd never seen any of that except the bigger box. She had given me tons last year including the same whitman folders of most series of US coins...
Well my mom, god bless her, has a horrible memory.. And had "forgot" to bring these out last year.. (Although she still swears I saw them.. If I had they would have been home with me a year ago...)
So it was 3 pre 65 (and just after) Washington quarters whitmans, 5-6 per page of 3 folders, I think there's 35 total.. most rough but rainbow (the last page of silvers is nice condition, the rest not as many.. But most all rainbow) plus 4 more pre 64 doubles in the last page of the clad part of the last folder. So 39 silver quarters..
A pre 65 Roosevelt dimes, only 12 dimes but most nice rainbow.
And a blank half dollar Whitman.. With a barber, 4 walkers, 3 franklin's, 2 64 Kennedy's (one was nicer than the MS-64 in my Dansco and crazy crescent rainbowed so it's not in the photo, it's in my album, the one in the photo also has a crescent but nowhere like the other) and 4 40%s pretty toned..

Unreal!! I was SOOO happy.. Those have probably been in those folders for over 25-30 years.. Maybe opened twice... If that!!
(Then there were about 15 rolls of sacagawea, pres, SBA dollars, tons of non silver Kennedy's and Ike's.. And a tub of over 800 wheats.. Some really nice (later years obviously.. I didn't go through them yet but right on top was a 1909... I grabbed it REAL QUICK.. But just a regular 1909, lots of teens on top too though.. And nice grade full luster 40's-50's that I can see, so I'll post if there's anything spectacular)
I grabbed the box of world coins too... But it looks like its gonna be a while still before I get to them...

I can't get good photos of the rainbow... Soooo hard to do.. You just have to imaging the few exampes I put up look better in hand.. And I'm only going to put pics of some.. It would be too many... Ok... There's never too many... But it would take too long.. Lol.

What most of the Washington's looked like.. Minus the last page.

The dimes... Too bad you can't make out the toning, the 1946s is amazing!

Wow congrats very nice find I'm jealous haha.
I used to have an awesome collection like that till around a week ago until someone decided to start collecting coins the easy way and grabbed a 3rd generation collection out of my car after a coin show.
I want to feel the weight of some silver coins in my hand again lol. Gotta go start my collection from scratch and get all new coins but hey thats the fun part haha

Wonderful story! I love hearing when coins are passed down from generation to generation.

Maybe next year it will be:

"Remember this 1916d dime you didn't want? I hope you will reconsider. Son? Son? Quick, someone get water, I think he passed out!"

Nathan, about the last thing on my mind, after losing my dad, was a *#@!(% coin.
Glad you revisited.

I'm not sure what you mean? I live less than a half mile from my mother, I go there every day.. Or her here. I just finally had some time to go through the world coins so I asked for them.. As she gave it all to me last year.. I just didn't choose to take it all home...
Coins were the last thing on my mind when my dad passed.. 3 years ago.. 2 years before my mom have me the first lot of the family coins.. And my gramps passed in '92..

They'd both said they wanted me to have the collection, because I used to collect world coins my grandparents brought me back from vacations from around the world.. but my mom held off on even telling me about them until I was about 30 because she didn't want me to sell them and buy a toy, which I very may well have done to buy a toy or something (quad, snowmobile etc)
Before she gave me the lot last year my wife was bringing out trash at work and on the top of a box in the dumpster was a leather bag. Curiousity got the best of her and thankfully she grabbed it.
It was a 1993 ASE, Peace $, 1863 IHC, few proof sets, silver Kennedy's (all 1964's) a some other coins and a bunch of scrap jewlery. She asked the bosses at work (a nursing home) and it was boxes of things from passed patients/residents, whom had no family or were unclaimed/wanted boxes... So they told her to keep it.. She gave them to me and I got hooked collecting again and a few weeks later (after talking nonstop about it the whole time with mom and wifey) my mom gave me the collection knowing I wouldn't sell it and would keep it going.
