Just to be devils advocate here, if the new security features on the loonie and toonie are so great, why doesn't the mint use them on the proof and specimen releases? It seems to be that those coins should benefit from these improvements too! Plus, isn't the specimen set loonie made of nickel? I thought it was too costly to make our coins out of nickel?
If anything, since mint products are bought out of appreciation, and not as speculative investments, I think that all commemorative coins should use steel slugs coated with nickel as well.
Why are we wasting our precious silver on coins wiht no security features, and being sold as art pieces, not investments? I for one am outraged.
/sarcasm mode off. Seriously though, isn't it funny that the mint isn't using the "security features" versions of the loon and toon in coin sets? If THEY don't believe in it, why should Canadians?

I wonder if they will sell for a lower premium.

my biggest "problem" with these new security coins...is the color. These coins look terrible, the colors are awful, especially when they are tarnished. They should have kept the old metal composition and added the new security features

Steel slugs are cheaper than nickel ones.

Are the specimen and proof loonies still plated nickel? I've been trying to find out.

The security features are specifically to defeat additional attempts to counterfeit circulation coinage. The fine silver pieces are certainly not going to experience that problem. You could argue that they should provide duplicate designs of the circulation pieces in the other finishes. But, note the missing RCM logo on all NCLT (since 2008, if I recall).

are we really having a large problem with counterfeit coins? how is a laser engraving going to help? (if I was going to pass fake coins I would probably do it through a coin counter or other device that doesn't care about engraving)
also, considering the quality of some of the loonies and 90% of the twoonies I would say the counterfeiters could make a more "real" looking coin...

Looks to me that it's only the specimen ones without the security feature, proofs do have it, am I wrong?
