I have looked at buying a USB microscope a couple of times. The reason I have not yet pulled the trigger is that these still are only 2MP.
My, now, old tech Kodak Easyshare camera is 7 MP, which means after I take a shot of a coin I can zoom in and see more details. So Does anyone know why they are not making 7 MP MP USB microscopes? I would think this would be a great benefit for looking REALLY close at coins.
Or is it like most everything else - they wait until everyone owns an older version and then come out with :
NEW! IMPROVED! You NEED this new model?

I wouldn't spend that much on a microscope, I'd just get a camera. You could get a pretty decent one for $550

I don't understand why this is so expensive. You can get a 12MP camera for under 100.00. I have to wonder why they cannot do this for a LOT less that the one you posted a link to.

A 12MP camera does not have to resolve at microscopic levels, which is a task requiring superior optics. Given the inherent magnification of digital sensors, even more pressure is put upon the optics. It's simply not possible to build a high-megapixel digital microscope cheaply. The AmScope garyo1954 linked is about what you'd expect to pay for such a beast.

I bought an AmScope microscope with a 10MP camera many years ago. About 2 years later I bought a Canon T2I and the Canon 100MM lens. The AmScope stuff has been collecting dust ever since. I almost took it to the FUN show and gave it away to a kid.

Thanks SsuperDdave. Physical restraints on tech can be annoying at times.

The only reason I didn't was that the original box accidentally got thrown out (with the nice Styrofoam sandwich for it) and I was afraid of it getting broken on the way since I thought of it last minute.
I likely will take it to Chicago and give it away since I have more time to pack it nice.

First photo was taken with a 1.5 megapixel Dino-Lite ($350), 2nd photo was taken with a 2 megapixel GSI ($22) and here is what the coin looks like in hand

Where did you get the $22 one from?

Wow - nice pics - but I do not know how large one of these coins is in hand. Could you possibly post a pic like this of, let's say a Lincoln Penny's mint mark? I really am looking for a camera that will make the MMs giant so I can tell RPMs easily (and also see DDOs on coins)

These are nice - is this the closest/largest the MM can be made - just curious.

I took the image a while ago, but I believe that was closest I could get. I think the image width was 3 times the width, and twice as tall before I cropped it. I am checking to see if I have the original image.
edit - not sure which one is the original, have a few versions

I think I could have gotten a closer image, but that was pulled back a little for lighting.
