I read a thread earlier about a 1900-O/CC Morgan and it got me thinking (dreaming) about putting a "variety" Morgan in my 7070. Needless to say that the 1882-O/S is not a rare bird, there are plenty of them out there, but I kinda narrowed down to two potential candidates PCGS versus NGC. Both of these appear to have nice luster (too bad about the different lighting) and the NGC has a splattering of tone and the PCGS version has those "golden toned" rims! I will keep the assigned grades under my hat for a day (or such) and see what the CCF has to say. Thanking you in advance for your interest! 1. NGC (Strong O/S) 2. PCGS (Recessed O/S) Edited by oih82w8 01/25/2013 4:15 pm

I like the second one's eye appeal, but the O/S strong is nicer.

I don't know if you have the ability to see them in person, but in all cases go for the one in the earlier die state - less of the "S" crossbar visible. If the crossbar on either is incomplete, snag it. I am uncomfortable with the attributions of either PCGS or NGC on these. If you have more detailed images - or can physically look - have a gander at the VAMworld guide: http://www.vamworld.com/1882+O+Over+SLearn the appearance of VAM-5; it modifies my statements above a bit. The term "Recessed O/S" indicates VAM-4, but I don't see the pitting I'd expect. The NGC description hints at VAM-3, but that should have a visible crossbar even in the images shown here. Expect a small premium over grade for the LDS states, and a rather larger premium for EDS. If the PCGS coin is an EDS VAM-4, jump on it. Hard.

Thanks for the link SsuperDdave! I thought that the more pronounced (visible) the "S" would be...the better.

Yep you want the least amount of crossbar showing to have a "big find" early die states are all worth a premium in the 1882-o/s series. I like the top coin best of the two you show.

The NGC Strong O/S is graded at MS61. The PCGS Recessed O/S is graded at AU55. I found a 1882 O/S VAM 3 PCGS AU55 EDS (PCGS image below). It seems kinda steep to me at 400, do you know what these normally have sold for? PCGS does not have a value on it and I do not have access to Grey Sheet or anything with an actual value. http://www.pcgs.com/Cert/20724414/

LDS examples are so common that they carry essentially no premium; VAM-3 is the most common O/S in EDS until you reach Mint State. Something better than 62 will get pricey indeed, though. ANACS has certified 1,000 of them in LDS, and 160 in EDS. I would call $400 quite steep for an AU EDS but there's very little record to support the hypothesis. ANACS has 34 of them in AU55.

I just can't part with that kind of money when everything that I have seen on this type (EDS) of coin indicates otherwise...being of a lesser value.
