Not for the first time I have just been refused service at a coin shop. I walk in with over $1000 cash in my wallet looking to buy a few nice coins to finish upgrading my penny set.
After buying a aUNC incuse 2000 50c for $7 (the only positive!) I asked to see some pennies. After being showed 5-6 EXTREMELY over graded and over priced coins I asked if they had any folders of new zealand coins to which I was advised "yes, but I cant be bothered letting you look because youre to fussy".
With that he turned around and left to go out the back so I just turned around and walked out. How can anyone run a business like that!!
As far as I know I wasnt unreasonable; I didnt tell him his crap was over graded and priced, I even rang ahead and said I would be coming in.
I suspect much if not all of the issues arise because I'm young and perhaps dont look like I have any money?
Safe to say I will be avoiding this shop like the plague. Anyone who can call a 1918 penny that has been cleaned, with only 6 pearls gEF and price it at $800 is a $&@&):$@! In my book! Add rudeness onto that and you have a horrible business man and person.
End of rant

No I'm on holiday in Melbourne at the moment. Have got some great coins already. This is the second bad experience in the last couple days. The first came when I negotiated and shook on a few prices with another dealer and then when he was adding it all up he reverted to the original prices. When I questioned this he got a bit upset so I had to leave again.

$7 for an Incuse is great, last time I looked they were $20+ on ebay. There are a lot of people under enormous monetary pressure in our community at the moment,it manifests itself in all sort of strange behaivour from road rage to just plain rudeness.

Im glad I got the incuse or else I may have actualy gone on a rampage. It took me over 2 hours to travel to this shop because the particular melbourne train line had issues today. He had no idea it was an incuse, not that I told him either. I was just in a pile of the normal 2000 50c which were priced at $7.

Sorry state of affairs when a business can't even be bothered showing you their products.! You did the right thing walking out.! Normally if someone likes a business they will tell a couple of people, if they dislike it they will tell a whole lot more.! Spread the word and keep it in the memory bank.!

i rest my case , I will not buy off any dealer , and I mean any dealer , even on this forum , I refuse to buy off any dealer because they go up 2 grades when selling and down 4 grades when buying , they have no concience when they rob people of their hard earny collection , trust me I know , I am talking about dealers in brisbane , but I believe in the other states they ary just as bad .. ,, kel ,,

There are a few good ones out there kel, just plenty that arent. I've had a great time the last week visiting some of the dealers in Melbourne CBD but both times I've ventured into the suburbs I've had a bad experience.

Pity you're not going to still be in Melbs in 2 weeks time. Would be interesting to try out some "tests" on Melbourne dealers lol

just commenting on the ones in brisbane I have had dealings with matt , but from the experence I have had with them in brisbane and had to sell to them as in desperate need of the money , and for what I got for my notes and coins , if would make me to frightened to ever walk into another coin dealers shop anywhere in australia .. in my eyes they just treat people as fools , and love to take advantage of people in their hour of need just like funeral directors .. ,, kel ,,

Being a younger collector myself I can agree. I am from Melbourne and more than once I have been in a coin shop or visited a dealer at a show only to be told sorry those coins are too nice for you and/or you can't afford them when I ask to look at them. I'm not saying I have $5.5 million to buy a set of cancelled banknotes but I have the funds to purchase the coins I ask to see and to not even be shown them they loose a customer for life, I don't get how people can run a business like that.

That sucks (except for the cheap incuse).
Is it really that hard to grasp that a young one has money and knows what they're talking about though?
