I don't know about anyone else, but I just can no longer get excited about US coins. There are just so many things that I don't like about them. The designs are mediocre at best, the designs keep changing and no consistancy to a single design as far as quarters are concerned. The dollar coin program is a BIG FAIL. I hate the edge lettering. Tired of dead old dudes on the coins, that is just NOT exciting to me. There is something to be said about old US coins but the moderns just plain stink. Mint and proof sets are huge! Not worth the price they charge. Why pay $27.95 when most of the coins in the set I have no intrest in? I don't care about these edge lettered monstrosities called dollar coins. Sure I like dollar coins but the edge lettering is a deal breaker. They actually look more like tokens than money. I HATE the $1 on the coins. Bring back ONE DOLLAR. Modern cent strikes just look flat with no relief. Pre 1982 coins seemed to have had higher reliefs where Honest Abe actually looked raised above the coins surface. Probably should just stop minting cents all together like Canada did. The cent just don't get any respect, people reject them when they get them in their change, find them on the floor, nobody cares. The buying power isn't there and they're just plain cumbersome. As for nickels and dimes they are just a dull series. At least the nickel had a makeover so I don't know what the hold up is for dimes. Half dollars could use a new obverse design, I love the reverse design though. Whew! Ok I am done for now...LOL!

Not much for me to disagree with there, especially the part about dollar coins looking like tokens. The original Sacagawea coin was much better in my opinion, but beauty in the eye etc. What I'd really like to know is why you don't like edge lettering? For me, it's one of my favorite features of coins. Of course, the dollar coin doesn't do edge lettering very well, but I really enjoy the lettering on the 1 pound coin, and the older 10 French franc coin.
I just had a great idea. We need to clone Teddy Roosevelt and Augustus St Gaudens! Who's with me!?

Why don't we just turn the U.S. mint into the Franklin Mint, like the RCM or Perth Mint ( no offense meant). A new design every ten minutes. A thousand of this coin, five hundred of this coin 10,000, 25,000 . 4 in this set , 6 in this set. They aren't mints, they are boutique stores. The coins mean nothing, they might as well be collectible medals. I like collecting COINS, legal tender. Don't get me wrong, I love the new Dino series and the Swarovski crystal coins, but I can tell you what the historical legacy of the Morgan dollar or Buffalo nickel is, what will be the legacy of the Spongebob or Starwars coins going to be.

I have no qualms about classic US coinage. But now its just getting rediculous. All modern coins are good for is commerce for me. I just don't see the collectibility for me personally. Sure there are a few moderns I may enjoy here and there but overall thats not the case. It's nice though I have Canadian coins as an alternative. :)

I don't care for the edge lettering because it's hard to tell what your holding unless you have your loupe w/ you.

The U.S. Mint could really learn a few things about proper edge lettering from the British and Spanish. I must agree with on the modern U.S. coinage. The Ike is the best from our moderns.

New Quarters New Nickel New Penny Edge Lettering Golden token appearance of the Presidential dollars Idea of the Presidential dollars Theres certainly a lot to complain about with the current group of coins coming out. Yes the dollars could have been much better done and not had the same color as chuck e cheese tokens, the nickel is bad imo, the penny is blah, it would be nice to see some variety on the Dime and Half at this point but not if that means making it look like the new nickel or penny. Change for the sake of change isn't always good. The Quarters series however is FANTASTIC as a whole. As far as circulating coinage goes though there just isn't much more to say, kind of in a rut at the moment

Recently I obtained a roll of circulated dollar coins from my bank and the edges on a few of them were completely worn. No way to tell what the mint mark was. Plus you can't see the edges when they are in a coin holder. With how crummy our nations coins are nowadays I'd welcome a cashless society and do everything electronically.

I like the ATB Quarters. The 2009 seriese of Lincoln cents were cool. I am not a huge fan of the shield cents or the new nickels, however, I do like the idea of a change in design rather than keeping the same style for too many years. I like coins that change up their subject matter. I would like to see more coins with a science subject (I am a biologist). There have been a few coins from other countries that display the nation's acheivements, maybe that would be a neat idea. Not sure, just change up the nickel somehow...

I agree, modern stuff is not very exciting to look at, nor very beautiful. The state and ATB Quarters are exceptions, but that is the reason I don't collect much beyond 1950. I prefer 1800's and wish I could afford 1700's US coins.

I agree with basebal21. I hate the new nickels but I still buying them in proofs. I hate the dollar coins with writing on edge!
