When sorting through some fairly unremarkable Indian head pennies, I found this one. It appears that the edges are completely folded back onto the coin all the way around on both sides. There also seems to be some pooling below the 'nt' in CENT.

Is this an error coin? I can't imagine how someone could do this after the fact. The middle of the coin is not damaged on either side.

Does it matter that you can't tell what year it is?

I have Googled myself silly and can't find an error similar to this, other than possibly a die cap error, but none of them look quite like this.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's a Dryer Coin.

The rim damage looks like the coin went round and round inside a machine -- like a clothes dryer.

Thanks for the responses.

I looked it up that may be what happened. It must have been in that dryer for years! So much of the rim is curled back on itself on both sides that the coin is about half normal size but the rim is twice as thick.

Oh well. Guess I'll toss it back in the pile and continue the search! :)

More than likely PMD but sure makes me wonder how things like that happen.

Everything on it points to a dryer coin--and this one is quite an example!

looks like it was encased at one time to me the way the damage looks around the outside area of the coin on both sides. I guess a dryer could cause it to look that way also but I just have never seen one that looks quite like this

Very interesting how the edge has rolled back over onto the design. Coins like this always capture the imaginations of people as to how they came to be.
