You know, I'll be the first to say that some of the newer coins lack beauty of old silver coins with lady liberty, but here's something else to think about.

Many people complain about US modern coins for various reasons.
But I started thinking about Canadian coins, and then about English coins, then Australian, barbados, some Papua New Guinea, New Zealand,
(for some reasons not Jamaican even though they are part of the Commonwealth realm)

And I thought.... Not only do they use pretty much the same portrait in each country's coinage, they use the same portrait on EVERY coin!
Example:

Not saying US coins couldn't improve, just saying we are not the only ones that could!

I agree all coins have their flaws. The ATBs and State Quarters were definitely a step in the right direction and it is nice that not every obverse has the same design, its just that other than the nickel theyve all been the same for so long now.

That endeavour coin is gorgeous by the way

That is funny - I was just thinking nearly the same thing the other day. I love the detail of some of the Austrailian and Candian coins and then I flip em and see the Queen on em... Then I thought - it could be worse - there could be Charles images all over the coinage.

I actually like the new series of Quarters going back to 1999 - although I am not a fan of the modified Obverse - I prefered the "classic" Washington image. I am not a shield penny fan, and think they should have given a little more thought to the other options and I loved the 2009 series of pennies. The nickel is out of place with the rest of our coins, and the half and dime are dated, but if they modify them like the nickel and penny they will fail as well. I like the dollar idea - just not the implementation nor the edge lettering. I like the NA coins - but wish they would return to the date being visable on the coin.

Other than those things... I like our rapidly devaluing coinage.

Writing on the edge was of course one of the nails in the gold dollars coffin, but only one of many.

Well, maybe if there was uniformity among dollar coins and a non-Kennedy bust on half dollars in the states they would be more readily accepted.

@Doug: I disagree. That coin needs edge lettering to make it look more legit.

I'm a sucker for variety, so the State and ATB Quarters are terrific to me! I also like the 2004/2005 Nickels, 2009 Lincoln cents, and the idea behind the recent dollars (although like a lot of people, I feel the implementation could have been better).

Edge lettering is definitely a deal breaker for me. I won't collect those bloody dollars. Should be on the obverse or the reverse and the edge should be reeded. The mint has become too commercial I think. They continue to make unpopular coins for a select few collectors and ignore the economic impacts of minting coins nobody wants to use.

I tell you what, I dont think old Liz would like to hear that sort of smack about her coinage!

Anyway, we have uniformity on the back so wheny ou look through our coinage(s) you only need to look at the front. Much much easier!

And it makes it so easy to make sense of the coins - the guy on the front is the guy who minted it.

lol, not smack talk, I just wanted to point out that American coinage is the only coinage that could use some ideas to make them more solidly collectible. You said yourself that most people over there don't really collect!

Sure--the Queen pretty much represents the commonwealth.
However, the "flip side" often has nice subject matter, especially those depicting wildlife.
Consider how many interesting US animals haven't found their way on coins--yet.
