There are die pit examples that mimic the dot.
There was a person in the Maritimes, I think last year, who was absolutely convinced (insert endless dancing bananas) that they had a legitimate business strike dot, but it turned out to be one of these die pits (although they were never convinced).

I would also hope you have a real 'dot' cent cookiecutter, but the 'dot' looks it should be more in the middle of the 9 and 3, this one seems to be off side some and, also doesn't seem big enough. But, like the others said, send it in to make sure.

Similar placement to the photo in 2013 charlton. Neat coin. Chip, dot, crud, whatever it is it captures the imagination and is cool.

cookiecutter, I would say it is not a 1936 dot, but a die anomaly. If you look at the confirmed 1936 dot penny photo in the link below http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story...auction.htmlyou can draw a straight line through the two big dots (above "ONE" and below "CENT") and the small dot below 1936. The dot in your photo seems to be off to the right.

Thanks for the opinions all. I haven't had a chance to visit my dealer yet, but after taking the close-up photos, I also didn't think it was the genuine dot. It's been a neat few days "fake" imagining what it might be like if I had the elusive dot penny. It's still a neat coin to have in my collection, and found in a circulation roll no less.
Maybe I'll affectionately call it the dud dot penny on my flip.

The true dot was not centered they were hand placed. Living examples show the dot closer to underneath the 3 then centered.

It is "a" dot, but it is not THE dot.

Doesn't seem centered enough. I remember a locked forum several months ago also concerning a dot cent from circulation.

Since there is at least one 36 dot coming up in an auction this year (maybe 2), then these discussions usually serve as a prelude to them. This is also being discussed on other forums. You can take what "carpman" and "Aussie Bob" say on the CCRS site http://www.canadiancoin.com/ Also fakes and forgeries have been around for years with these, as are many pits in the working die that cause what appear to be dots, but aren't. Also be on the look out for any poster named "Dean" as any discussions about 36 dots bring he and his followers out of the woodwork .. don't believe the conspiracy theories about other placements and hijinks. Discussions about 36 dots always are good for a page or two of spirited comment, regardless the site.

We could call this one the "poor mans dot".
