I ordered this book this week. Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins [Hardcover] http://www.amazon.com/Whitman-Encyc...p/0794825419I am hoping it will have enough information to make it worth the purchase. I am really curious what coins circulated here. (United States and British colonies 1620 - 1858). If there are other books the experts like please post them here. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

For attributing that is probably about the best book out there. It has all of the major colonial issues all in one book and with good (if off color) pictures of all the varieties in one place. If you want to know more about the background history of any of the issues as well then I would recommend Early Coins of America by Sylvester Crosby.

Walter Breens encyclopedia of U.S. & Colonial coins is also a great resource. Whitmans encyclopedia is an excellent resource for Colonial and pre-Colonial issues.

Want to go old school as you progress? Get a copy of Sylvester Crosby's "Early American Coins" one of the first numismatic books that really covered colonial issues, that was my first book on early american issues (other than already having Breen's Encyclopedia). The Bower's Whitman will be my next one. One can never have too many books on a subject. Crosby's book: http://www.amazon.com/Early-Coins-A...p/0942666240Funny thing when I brought up the link in Amazon it suggested the Whitman-Bowers book as an addition to order!

I got the book today, so far I really like it. Good reading, but hard for me to just look at all the pictures.
I can see there is a lot to learn.
Thanks for the suggestions on other books, I almost ordered the Crosby book today, but will hold off until I get through this one.
I forgot about the Breens book .. I think I might know where one is .. will have to see what I can get it for.
I do have a few early coppers .. but most are pretty low grade and hard for me to figure out what they are.

Breen's data is to be taken with a grain of salt, especially in mintage or rarity figures, for the most part his research is solid, but over the years, many things he couldn't he guessed and sometimes that became fact. From a lot of research done by Kevin Flynn in the 2¢ series of proof coin mintage figures. I think his book is still quite valuable, once in awhile I'll see one sell for $50 but it seems most copies still bring $75-125. The Crosby book was one of the first numismatic books that took collecting seriously and tried to tell the history of US and early colonial coinage. Here is a link, to a post I made previously on the S. S. Crosby book. https://goccf.com/t/115285&SearchTerms=auction

Looks like a good read, I've read several of Bowers' books and they are chock full of info and supporting pictures.
