A press release has just been issued by the RAM apologising for their treatment of collectors and promising to treat them with greater respect from now on.
Changes at the RAM include.
- detailed information on mintages and publication of mintages as soon as they are known for circulating coins.
- Mint coin sets will no longer have scratched and substandard coins in them. They will be of specimen quality.
- Mint coin sets will no longer be sold at more than 8 X the face value of the coins. They will be at a realistic price of slightly above the cost to produce.
- The RAM, being a body that was created by the taxes of coin collectors will no longer view collectors purely as a revenue stream.
Full details of the press release can be seen at

'Specimen quality' coins are produced in a slightly different manner.
Different, slower speed presses are used, and every coin is struck at higher pressure, and extracted from the press individually, rather than just being allowed to fall onto a pile and bulk bagged, as with coins to be issued for circulation. That is where the term 'bag marking' comes from.
Because die life is not so important, higher striking pressures can be applied. Naturally they cost more to produce, especially when specially designed packaging is included in the price.
I suspect that the RAM has copped a bit of flak regarding 'mint uncirculated' coins being less than perfect, so they have upped the ante to 'specimen quality' coins. Packaging should be much the same sort of quality.
Next thing as a result: What will the Mint charge for 'specimen quality' Mint Sets? Will it be significantly different to past pricing practices? At least we will know what the mintage numbers will be sooner, after the production run is finished, rather than waiting for the annual Mint Report. The smaller the run, the sooner you should know.
