I have noticed on ebay that one seller in particular is selling otherwise high grade Morgans with Artificial Toning created by exposing the coins to an electrical field.

My question is why would you do that? Doesn't it destroy the value of an otherwise valuable coin?

I could see if they were Roosevelt dimes or Washington quarters But to destroy a Morgan just doesn't make sense.

With lots of experience and skill, it is very easy to improve the appearance of toning on silver coins, and is also, depending on the coin, almost impossible to pick.

For best results, the changes are very subtle.
If the toning proceedure seems to be going the wrong way, they stop immediately.

and if I may add, with an equal amount of experience and skill, one can easily pick out the above referenced fraudulent behavior

as to why folks do it? lots of reasons with the first being that there is a niche market of buyers who pay ridiculous premiums for naturally toned coins

they love the look and its a rare phenomenon when it occurs in certain ways so you truly have a one of a kind specimen even within the same grading population

A rainbow toned Ms Morgan is a beautiful thing to behold, no wonder there are fakers out there who try to achieve this.

vermontensium - cn't get any more accurate than that. I've sold common MS63PL 1880-S dollars with amazing rainbow toning original for near MS66 money!
