You'll have fun with a USB scope and they take up relatively little space.

The problem with the cheap scopes are that the lens are plastic. The glass ones for a microscope give a lot better image.

Be sure to look in the section on here for Coin Photography. There is quite a bit of discussion there about taking pics with USB microscopes as well. Maybe some info will help you with improving the quality of our pics.
