The FEV, or Friendly Eagle Variety, for those not familiar enough with the Eisenhower dollar series to know all of its varieties acronymically, debuts in this year's Red Book, where it will now be called the 1971-D Type 1. The common reverse 1971-D that most collectors have in their collections will become known as the 1971-D Type 2. This was my first year as Red Book contributor and I felt very strongly that adding the FEV to the list of Ike type coins was important for the series. Numismatically, it is the right thing to do. Hopefully, the NGC will start to recognize it and collectors will be able to submit them for attribution without paying the variety fee- which is typically done when a variety is listed in the Red Book. If you collect Ikes do you have an FEV already? What do you think about this development? Charles Morgan *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Woohoo! Great promotion for a great coin series! Now do we also get a new acronym and call them FEIs for "Friendly Eagle Ikes"

I'm considering an Unc/Prf set collection of Ike's. I have all of the Blue Ike's and Brown Ike's, but I'm thinking about breaking them to put in an album. I'm not as interest in value as I am about having something this I like and will pass on to my Grandson... What are your thoughts on this?

Interesting. I do not have one, and I only have two of the three 1972 varieties (which are, of course, recognized by the Red Book). It gives me something to think about, since I had been avoiding the "unofficial" varieties. Now there are two "official" Eisenhower dollar varieties that I need; however, neither are recognized by Dansco.

Would someone mind posting a picture of this variety so I may see it?

I've got one, but I wish I had gotten some high grade ones before they made the Red Book. Mine has pretty nice luster but is kinda baggy on the obverse.

high grade ones cost $100+ before RedBook. I think being in RedBook allows the coin to become more recognized. it's not a rare coin. 1,000,000+ were made.

So you are saying this isn't a rare vareity, only rare in high grade? Is that correct. And that over 1 mil were made? Because the links and all the hubbub have the tone of Ultra rare, WOW, buy it now and I just want to be clear what we are discussing

The Ike Group has never promoted the coin as being rare. We think the coin may have a million examples in existence. This is a small number compared to that date's overall mintage. Also, most of these examples circulated. Mint State populations? Who knows? There are hundreds known- and there are untold thousands to be found if you know where to look. It's worth a premium over the common reverse and the pricing suggests that premium.
The 1971-D Variety 2 (common reverse) in MS-66 is a common coin for the series. The 1971-D Variety 1 (FEV) in MS-66 is much less common.
I'm not promoting it one way or another, just stating facts. Collect what you like.

Appreciate your knowledge and experiences on these. I have had minimal interest in Ikes until recently when I found a 1972S brown box DDO from a dealer after searching his inventory rigorously and finding near nothing. At that point I realized each DDO in that proof series could be speculated to only have a few thousand per die. I'm still unsure if I'm holding a CPG variety or an unattributed one, but Looking at the mintage numbers I see you guys over there have alot of work on your hands, its obvious why Ike varieties are becoming more intersting with the following you guys have over there. The DDO / DDR that was noted on the FEV interests me the most, and I'll be keeping an eye out for those or FEV in high grade. Thank you

Wait, the friendly eagle is the rare one? My ONLY Ike other than a bicentenial is a 1971-D FEV.
Worn a bit, but it's early enough that you can even see the shuttle with the bare eye.
