I bought this SLQ off of ebay which in the out of focus pictures in the auction looked like an AU coin. When the coin arrived it didn't look to bad in the 2 X 2 when I took it out the coin clearly had polished as it had mirror surfaces and reflectivity. Most of the coins that I have seen that were polished on a buffing wheel or something along those lines will have a lot of the detail washed out. This coin still shows a lot of detail and the fields don't appear to be smoothed and there don't appear to be any straight or circular light scratching.

Was this coin dipped? I thought dipping caused the coin to become somewhat porous and dull but white. It appears that there was some folder materiel stuck to the reverse which is why the coin was cleaned. The coin is much more reflective (and not in a good way) in real life.

Original ebay photos

A soft-enough buffing wheel or handpolishing, wielded by someone who has a decent touch, won't "pile" metal or obscure details. That's what happened here.

Returning it tomorrow.

I guess I am only out $2 or so to send it back.

You win some and you lose some.

I'll have to settle for the one I already have for my raw set and a lowly AU53 until I can afford a few affordable true MS examples.

Yeah dipped and polished.
And I agree the ebay photo looks decent.
Some coins you can buy sight unseen (which many of these tricky ebay pics are)
and some coins you need to hold in your hand.

I like the toned coin in the holder best.
Thing about toning, it can help greatly to determine originality

Ohhhhh mommy, I like that second 1930 !

There was a youtube video floating around here somewhere of this guy polishing Kennedy half dollars to a proof like finish. That's what this coin looks like it's had done to it.

I found it...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixrlPYcRvjM

The OP's coin was once whizzed and then polished. The whizzing is evident in the fields and amog the legends.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
