How do you feel about all of the Commemorative Quarters issued since 1992? Do you think it is overkill? Do you like the use of colour? I'm glad that they have not totally abandoned the caribou but I think they are overdoing it a little. I'm not a big fan of the colouring - it reminds me too much of play coins - just seems too fake and gimmicky for me. The mint already makes enough of that peripheral stuff for those who want it. Your opinions?

I personally like a commemorative coins and love the colored ones as well, but the RCM has gone way overboard in recent years....they come out with a new coin what seems like once a week. They make a coin for everything....Soon they will make a coin because its Tuesday....grass is cool, let make a coin

Nothing wrong with a couple commemorative coins per year. I just wish the 5 cent and 10 cent coins can get a little bit of the action.

I'd like more commemorative nickels too.
Mind you, I've never liked the caribou much, so I'm glad to see something else on the quarter. The only commemorative series I'm sick of are all the Olympics - if they had coloured more I'd be on board, but all the Vancouver 2010 ones look the same and the Olympic Moments are a bit confusing.

I love the 1992 25 cent coins during Canada 125. And I did not pay too much attention with the other series as it was becoming overkill... And having too many rolls to collect.

All the Olympic ones came as coloured too from Petro stations (just a line of red on the maple leaf) Yes the 1992 series is my favorite non-coloured ones. 1999 and 2000 were overwhelming... and all the uncirculated sets with coloured coins, like birthday, graduation, wedding, etc... almost impossible to collect everything.

I think it's overkill as well. Plus now we have so many foriegn coins circulating since no one know what a normal Canadian quarter looks like anymore. Of course it also means that my Korean 100 won ($0.09cdn) coins can be used without any body noticing.. lol

I've only found one of those so far... vending machines don't like them but they'd probably slip by a cashier.

I like the commemorative quarters. It was the 1973 Mountie that first got me interested, I think. I really liked the 1992 provincial quarters, but I didn't quite enjoy the two millennium years so much. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate them, but they don't light my fire as much. By contrast, the 2011 parks quarters appeal to me a great deal. And I'm busy trying to get the War of 1812 quarters. I can see how it does verge on overkill, and have no interest in the wedding, birthday, etc. coins, but I also think some of these probably entice new people into the hobby.

How about the NCLT 2005 silver quarter celebrating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands?
Scarcest Canadian 25c ever made, I think. Only 3500 made for a special Dutch set with uncirculated Euro coins.

There's two on ebay right now for $68,$72. Surprisingly small increase for 8yrs- rmc, I like it too.

1992 quarter set is wonderful, and 1999/2000 quarter sets are good too. Olympic set is easy to get worn. I'm just wondering how will RCM issue coins in 2017 to celebrate the 150 year of confederation, with 13 province/territories now?

1992 province quarters are the first set I ever completed. Maybe the new releases aren't meant for established collectors but getting new collectors interested, as well as celebrating Canada. I remember collecting them and still love to look at the depictions from the provinces, is Ontario best represented by a windblown tree or Alberta by a hoodoo (possibly from Milk river or Drumheller area)?
The 2005 Saskatchewan centennial quarter has a very similar design to the 1992 (grain elevators, railway, wheat). Very 'Dog River, Sk' were nothing changes...

I actually like all these commemorative quarters, although I agree that the nclt wedding, holiday, birthday etc. coins are quite excessive. I also agree that the nickel and dime should get some more commemorative designs as well. I have one of those nclt canadian open dimes, I like it a lot and I wish they issued it for circulation, I use it as a ball mark when playing golf.

I'm betting on a content for Canada's 150th coins, like they did for the centennial and provincial quarters. Time to get drawing ;)
