I had a roll of BU 1996 W Roosevelt dimes in a roll on the table yesterday, and they're not there today. Now with total disclosure, I also had another roll of spendable dimes next to it and clearly told her which one to grab. My stomach is in knots over what I lost in value as I gave just $10 for the roll from my uncle who is a junkman and got them from a storage unit he cleaned out. The funny thing is he didn't want to "do me wrong" so just let me spend $10 for them. When I looked back he was laughing at me like I had a garbanzo bean for a brain.

Now I know my wife didn't mean it and it's too late to retrieve the roll so I'm hosed. This made me wonder what other horror stories do you guys have?

My head started hurting ..after reading about half your post.

I really feel your pain

I started putting a roll of 1996W's about a year ago .. I need to put more effort into it, I think I have 10 to 15 in the roll so far. I think it will take over $500 to put a roll together.

Look at the brighter side of all this. Those probably ended up in a bank, got dumpted in with a pile of other coins. Now being distributed to everyone and for those that collect coins, they too will now have some. Not real comforting though.
The glummy way of looking at this is they all may end up in vending machines or thrown into wishing wells.

She grabbed a roll a went to get cigarettes, at a local store. When I realized what happened I went to the store about 30 hrs later and they were busted open for change. My only hope is to wait a week or two then go to the area banks (three) and grab about $100 in dime from each. I figure I'll recoup about 10%. (I live in a very small town about 3000)

Man! I am sorry.
Well, this might make you feel a little better.
Few years back, I was at a major show here in Southern California. While at a dealers table, a customer came over with a raw (housed in an Airtite) MS Liberty Double Eagle that he wanted to sell. The dealer asked if the coin could be removed so he could examine it closer. While doing so, the dealer dropped the coin, on edge, on the cement floor putting a huge dent in the rim. Some people could not take it and walked away. I just felt bad for both the dealer and the seller.

This kind of story is exactly why I don't keep my coins in the open. When my Son was around 7 years old (he's 23 now), I introduced him to my coin collection. His interest was tepid to say the least, but he seemed to pay particular attention to the 8-10 Morgan dollars that I had in lock-tite holders. A few days after me and my son went through the coins, I noticed all of the Morgans were freed from the Lock Tites and gone. After some very brief detective work, my son informed me that he'd given the Morgans to several of his friends. The end of the story turned out well... We retraced his trail and I got all of the Morgans back.

There's a jewellery store in the town where I live that sells second hand gold coins that people have brought in. Usually they're just old bullion coins but about a year ago I saw that one of the coins appeared to be a proof Half-Sovereign that was being sold at a price you would normally expect to pay for a bullion version. I thought I might get myself a good deal (a gold proof coin for the price of gold bullion) so I asked to see the coin. The jeweller not only opened up the capsule and removed the proof coin with his bare hands (putting a nice fingerprint on the coin) he had made a small sticker with the price written on it and stuck it straight onto the coin itself! I couldn't believe they could ruin a coin like that. Needless to say I did not proceed with the deal.

More sad stories really don't help but try this one. A neighbor of mine USED to collect Gold Coins. He had them in a safe in his house. Since he was old and living alone, he gave the combination to his Daughter and Son in Law. their Son, not sure how he found the combination, went to his Grandfather's house when not at home. Opened the safe, took all the Gold Coins, sold them all for drugs.
He ended up in jail but since his Grandfather was and is old, he felt sorry for the kid so he bailed him out, dropped all charges. All coins lost though.
