I seen this coin on ebay, and was going to place a bid (Had a $99 starting bid, or $199 Buy-it-Now).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1906-D-Barb...p=true&rt=nc

Unfortunately, the seller would not ship to Canada, so I wasn't allowed to bid, or contact the seller.

My knowledge of grading Barbers isn't the best, but this looks like an AU-55/AU-58 coin to me.

Which forum did I have this posted in? I thought I had it in the Classic US Coin Grading.

It was in Classic US Coin. Not the grading section. Not an issue.

I'd go AU55 details cleaned and artificially retoned, not worth slabbing IMO, but still a primo example for a type set that's affordable!

AT due to the halo effect around Liberty, very obvious if you know what you are looking for, underneath that neat toning are a lot of little nicks and ticks, especially in the neck area, around the eye and high cheek. The close up zoom on ebay shows plainly the wear marks on Liberty's face.

I will go with AU-58. The toning appears fine to me. On the obverse, the area in between the leaves, around the stars, and around the date are toned in one color but the leaves, stars, and date are toned in a different color. On the reverse, I see the same thing with the stars, lettering, and within the recesses of the feathers. This kind of shift in color because of the elevation was something I learned was a characteristic of natural toning.

thanks for that explanation D0ubl3Eagle on toning. I learned something new today and its very useful for future grading. I had always heard that when you see these blueish discolorations on silver that it was due to old cleaning and retoning.

I don't see any wear and the strike is exceptionally strong. There is perhaps a bit of rub in the right obverse field and on Liberty's cheek and neck. The toning looks OK to me. It may well be artificially enhanced but I would not be surprised if it was deemed acceptable by a grading service.

Based on these images it's at least AU-58 IMO.

I should clarify my AT statement, I think the toning is actually natural but was artifically accelerated (through heat possibly), could be entirely natural just as easily. I don't think the coin would get a details grade for the color, but for the surfaces issues. Either way it's a very nice coin with great eye appeal and that's what counts. It has good detail and a full strike, the only thing I don't like is the little pin jerk spots on the neck and one on the rim at 1:00 obverse. They are strange looking - I'm not sure what caused them (not form other quarters hitting it in a bag. With a grade of AU58 I'm okay with but I went AU55 due to those pin jerk spots. Not a large difference in pricing between the 55 and 58 grades on this date mint mark.
