In 2002, the Full Step Nickel Club released a 2-coin set of "fantasy" pieces to commemorate the original design submitted by Felix Schlag for the Jefferson nickel. The original reverse design pictures Monticello in a 3/4 view. It was not liked, and so Schlag (with the suggestions of the committee who reviewed the design) provided at least one additional design which was accepted as the Jefferson nickel reverse that we all know well today. The committee also did not like the "art deco" font that Schlag had used -- this was eventually also replaced with a standard serif-type newsprint type font.

The dies for these fantasy pieces were prepared by Ron Landis of the Gallery Mint. He is a brilliant artist, and is especially well known for his amazing Hobo Nickel art. The fantasy pieces were issued in two finishes, MATTE and PROOF, as described on the labels. Each finish was struck in a limited mintage of only 1,938 coins, to commemorate the original year of issue of the first Jefferson nickel. They were originally issued for $38 for the MATTE piece and $42 for the PROOF piece (including shipping) -- $80 for the pair. All pieces were individually numbered and encapsulated by SEGS. You can find a lot more detail at this link: http://www.gmmnut.com/gmm/gmm48.html#fsnc.

I have always wanted a pair of these, and finally found a set on ebay for little more than their issue price. They are stunning pieces of art work in hand, and I've posted pictures of my set below. You will note that my pair I posted is serial number #927.

Cheers,
-Brandon

This is funny. I remember seeing the initial advert for these and thought about buying them. Congrats on a great find.

Kind of cool... do look cartonish as noted. Also rather humorous a group called full step took the steps off...

Cartoonish but that was what his winning design looked like. What is odd is that after they had him redue the design the final adopted design is almost identical to one of the rejected designs. Five cents was a little smaller on the approved design than on the other sculptors rejected one. In my opinion the 1938 to 2003 five cent piece was one sculptors work that had anothers name credited to it, and their initials later placed on it.

Nice .. thank you for sharing. I like learning new information

And ... I want one

The only bad part .. is I think I have seen one these in the not to distance past .. and pass on it .. because I did not know what it was.

I think coins like these adds to a nice Jefferson collection.
