Can we get some expert opinions on this 1802 LC for grading. I'm guessing VG10, what does everyone else think? I'm thinking that what looks like a lot of wear some of which may be due to a weak strike. I'm basing that on the fact the high point of the devices are a little stronger with more detail such as the hair, "ONE CENT" and the bow. One thing I just noticed was the strange letters in the word "CENT". also there is a die break from the "E" in America to leaf #2. I'm thinking this could be an S238 R-4. Can I get other comments on variety? If this is an S238 can anyone comment on possible value? Edited by panzaldi 05/30/2013 4:32 pm

I am definitely no expert but to me the reverse looks VG10 and the obverse VG8.

Supgog. After I posted this. I looked at it closer and decided that the Liberty was throwing me off. The full face and hair should have tipped me off this was VF. Do youknow anything about this variety?

Based on the hair and amount of drapery, it looks around F15.

Another really nice LC! F-VF, weak strike, nice portrait, strong reverse (except for rt side legend, and it has great eye appeal IMHO. I agree with S238:) Nice photos!

TJsCoins. any ideas on possible value?
here are some values of sold S238:
Goldburg Auctions had a VF30 tied for CC#1 going for over $13000 and in the Noyes census, photo #ANS1442 graded VF25 and tied for CC#5.
A VG8 corroded example sold for $375
A VF-25 Example - Superior Galleries "Pre-Long Beach" Elite Coin Auction, May 25-27, 2003, Lot 514, sold for $8,625.00

Panzaldi. Wow, big numbers!! It is good that you are looking at auction prices but it does seem like a big difference in selling prices. I am not sure why. Maybe someone here on CCF with more knowledge of this variety can shed some light. I have is Penny Whimsey for reference; it shows S238 as "R6, very rare (13-30 known)". I also suggest that you might try checking out Early American Coppers online: http://eacs.org/ I am hoping to get a membership for my birthday.

All together, I say VG-10, but I don't know the value.
