I am REALLY getting tired of this! I called the min this AM to tell them I was shipping back the 5 sets they sent and to tell them why. Linda answered. In the course of discussion, she told me that the customer service people are not supposed to tell anyone that the mint will pay the return shipping since it is not them, but the claims department who makes this decision! I told her I had been guaranteed by two other people there that it would be and was given the FAX number to send the information to. She again told me that they are not allowed to tell anyone they will be re-imbursed shipping since it is all up to the claims department. I asked her why I was told this by two people. She said that she knows there is a turnover in the cs department, but she has been there since the start (sounds familiar - Crystal - the one who told me I would be re-imbursed said the same thing to me) and knows what she is talking about. So what gives here? After 3 years of this nonsense, I admit I have lost my normally optimistic view of wanting to give the benefit of the doubt. I sent back the sets and cancelled the order. It has been made quite clear to me once again that they really have no clue as to what is going on and the CS is simply the farce it proved to be back in my horrible ordeal over their computer confirming/cancelling/phone call re-confirmed order of my 2011 sets I never got. Who can I write a nice letter to to report this? No one. I have gone all the way to the top with them before. They simply know they have the market, there is no competition, people will keep coming back, and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Grrrr...

Clairhardesty your pictures define why it is enhanced uncirculated not enhanced proof. It took me a long staring match with the coin to be convinced

Great pics Clair - I wish I had taken pics and posted them of the stuff they sent me. One in the last batch had so many white particles on the surface it looked like someone had lightly sprinkled salt over it. If I had taken pics like yours, you would see hairs in the capsule, white smears in the fields, spotting, etc. I don't know, I am thinking of calling and seeing if they will send one set but refund the other 4. This way at least I will have one.

Earle if I had 250 posts and a good enough camera I would offer you a set for issue price I just don't know if 14 mp is enough to guarantee your satisfaction...

Hi Steve - I appreciate the offer. Really, I know it might seem this way, but I am not being picky on these. These were awful - scratches visible without magnifying, foreign matter etc. It was the first thing I saw when I looked at the coins. The weird thing is is was mainly just the Enhanced pieces that were messed up. I am guessing the enhanced ones were packaged by different people than the RPs were, and the person doing the enhanced pieces I got should not have had the job! In 2011 their computer messed me up and I spent a LOT of time on the phone trying to get things straightened out - and never did. Last year it took a couple phone calls after they messed up my order things up, but hey sent me five beautiful RP 2012s sets. BTW - my camera is only 7 MP - getting old now I guess

Unfortunately, I'm in FL right now but received the email that my last 2 sets are in the mail. First two were flawless.

stev18, the only thing keeping the "enhanced uncirculated" coin from being a proof is the missing second strike, and I think that they may well be getting it. The classic numismatic definition of proof is: special planchet, special die, special handling, and two or more strikes. The 2009 UHRDE $20 gold piece "business strike" meets all of the criteria and is in fact a proof coin. I suspect that many modern "uncirculated" coins are in fact satin proofs, that they are in fact struck twice. The 2013 Enhanced Uncirculated ASE looks to me like it has received that second strike and is therefore a proof coin. The mint isn't in the of telling us how many strikes coins get so attributing the classical definition of proof to a coin usually involves a little guesswork. I wouldn't be surprised if the proof AGEs (at least the 1oz variety) get three strikes. They are struck on "crown gold", 91.67% Gold, 3.0% Silver, 5.33% Copper, making them very hard. US gold commemorative coins are struck on "coin gold", 90% Gold & 10% Copper.

Clair I'm not that educated yet. My comment was based on the field being a satin finish versus the devices being frosted or mirrored. And Earle should things not work out send me a pm some time :)

stev18, I suppose both views are equally valid. I am old school(and old), as a kid my pocket was full of silver coins which I spent freely on candy, soda, and the movies. Even silver dollars were still in use but the silver certificates were taking over in peoples minds and the big silver pretty much only came out on birthdays and holidays. I still have a handful of the Morgan & Peace dollars that my parents used to give us (I remember getting them at Easter) and we would then sell them back to my dad for paper to spend. I now use those same dollars and a bunch of 1964 coins that I got when I bought 10 mint sets at Easter, giving them to my sons and buying them back when they want to spend their booty. Of course, the exchange rate is no longer 1 to 1 like it was when I was young. Don't get caught up in semantics (like I sometimes do), enjoy the coins, enjoy collecting and displaying them, and you will have a lifelong hobby that rewards both the wallet and the heart.

Quote: I suspect that many modern "uncirculated" coins are in fact satin proofs, that they are in fact struck twice. They are not struck twice. However, they are struck at a lower speed and with greater pressure than the business strikes for circulation. They are also handled differently during the entire process. I would not call them proof, but they are certainly special.

jbuck, I understand that the special mint coins are essentially proofs minus that second strike, but especially in the case of the "Enhanced Uncirculated" ASE, I assume that they are struck on highly polished planchets like the reverse proof coins (might be just burnished, no way to tell other than word from the mint). If that is true then only that second strike prevents it from being a proof coin in my admittedly retentive definition of the word. One wonders then, why not go ahead and strike them a second time? The added cost of that second strike must be exceedingly small compared to the overall cost of taking a fresh blank to inventory at PBGS.

I do not know enough about how the Enhanced Uncirculated ASE is made to render an opinion, but this is definitely an interesting conversation.
