Poll Question
Hey just quick question for all of you. I have quite a few coins in the $200-800+ range and was thinking of selling them to buy some really nice coins. What's everyone's opinion should I sell and upgrade or not? At the moment I am leaning towards upgrading. If I sell how should I go about selling them to maximise the money I can spend on other coins? also which coins do you recommend I look out for?
p.s. at the moment shillings are what I am collecting and was thinking of upgrading my vf 1915 shilling to an ef or aunc 1915 shilling

When I upgrade I get the upgrade first and IF I can bring myself to do it sell the other coin at my leisure. the trouble is with me I still have most of the upgraded coins Whatever you do don't sell for less than what you are happy with If your coins are slabbed give numisbid a crack, Walter seems to get some great prices for his clients.

I have started collecting again after 10 years or so, and this time I am determined to buy the best grade I can, even if it means waiting until I have the money. But yes then I will sell the lower grades.

About two weeks ago, before attending a show, I gathered several extra coins to have with me just in case I found something. I was shown a coin and I wanted it. So, after negotiations, I traded all of them and some cash to obtain the coin that I wanted.
But oh my florin, this is a different approach than the one that you describe. Upgrading to a specific date requires much searching. In that case, the advice to upgrade first and sell secondly is quite sound.
Rather than constantly striving to upgrade, I choose to assemble higher than average coins. Not the upper end, but better than usually found. To achieve this goal, I must be willing to part with others.

I voted to sell them but this is something I struggle with myself and most of my "excess" coins aren't even worth that much.
I have thought about selling some of my proof coins but wonder if getting them slabbed first would realize a higher price. I think this is the way to go for your high grade items.

I upgrade when cash permits so. I'm always looking to upgrade to the next level.i have a graded proof Jefferson nickel set almost complete (NCG-PCGS).i have about 20 coins to sell that I upgraded but just haven't had the time to list them yet.at the same time I am working on a complete uncirculated set in my dansco. I have no problem selling the extra coins because I know they are going to another collector.

thanks mint67 for your advice but I don't know if I would like to send any of them to a TPG firstly it would cost quite a bit to ship and get them graded and secondly after spending time on the American forum you never know what a TPG will send back at times. At the moment the coins I am considering selling are: 1915 shilling VF 1885m shield sovereign gEF/aUNC 1870 Sydney mint sovereign EF and may consider selling my: 1927 Canberra florin CHUNC 1915H florin gF 1925 penny VF 1914H florin aVF to purchase: 1915 shilling EF or aUNC I don't know what else I may purchase hopefully tony will have some nice coins at the next Petersham coin show he said he was currently breaking up two great collections of shillings perhaps I will give him a call or maybe send an email to Klaus ford and see if he has anything. Anyway I am looking to add something absolutely amazing to my collection so it any one has any tips on any coins I should look out for in particular for the shilling series or a particular dealer that may be able to help me that would be great

I've never been able to understand why people buy / collect lesser quality coins w/ the idea that they'll "upgrade" later. Why not just collect higher quality coins from the start?

Because at the time they cant afford the best. You have to seriously ask yourself if you will miss those coins. Youre not simply upgrading one coin but you are selling several different coins to fund an upgrade. If you decide that the 1915 upgrade will make you more happy then go for it. If you have enough money to buy the coin before selling the others then I would recommend that first. If not then sell the others first. I would sell on ebay making sure you had good photos and a good description. Maybe list as a BIN with a slightly optimistic price but a note in the description saying that the following week it will be for auction. That way people who may be interested might have more chance to see it and know youre going to sell.

I hear you oh my Forin. It could be a bit hit and miss. I have never actually sent any of mine off to a TPG but I had good results selling the already graded coins on ebay.

Thanks everyone for the help to be honest I am only a hundred of being able to upgrade the 1915 and I have no idea what I will buy just yet just thinking of selling some. By the way I try to buy as well as I can but because I don't earn very much (17 years old and only on junior wages) I dont really have the funds for better and I save 90% of that for coins.

Exactly what I ended up doing today. Got rid of dustbunnies for coins to complete a set. Everybody wins.

I don't ever intend to sell any of my coins for whatever reason, but that's just my opinion. If you're comfortable with selling then go ahead. ebay is probably the easiest option, but for what it's worth I myself would be hesitant to buy gold coins on ebay.
