Another Morgan acquisition today! As the title states, I was wondering if you guys think that this Morgan dollar would qualify for a grade of ms 65. I think that it is an easy 64, and I held it up to several PCGS slabbed 65's in the store and they seemed pretty similar. But, I would like some advice from the always spot on CCF before sending it in. This date has a decent price jump from 64 to 65 and again to 66.

really sweet coin vince22. the luster is awesome on this. I think you got a solid 65 here and on a good day at the TPG maybe a 66. congrats on finding this one.

Send it. I see no reason for you not to see this in a 65 slab.

Thanks everyone, and for the quick responses! I am now pretty confident with the purchase, for 85$. I'll maybe bump this in a couple weeks when it and my 1891-P come back from PCGS!

Hi Vince22, What is the line on the rev between E and D (faintly from the T to the E and D)? Perhaps it is just a piece of lint but it may just be my imagination helping me believe it is a die crack. I don't know enough about VAM; any known variants with this line? -Jay

I took a look at vamworld, and the "imaginary lint variant" doesn't exist for a Philly '97 :)

It's a die crack. You got me looking, and I didn't find a listed VAM showing that crack. That's inconclusive; the data is incomplete and it might be a later die state of an existing VAM.

Good eye! I didn't catch that. There is also a die crack on the reverse from A-T-E in states. The photo hides it a bit. I don't know if that helps identify it! I haven't researched VAMs much, but they seem intriguing!

I think it's really close to a MS65, don't think it will make a MS66 grade unless there is a lot more luster, but still very uncommon to find raw Morgans with such clean cheek and fields.
