I have heard of the mint polishing away a die clash, but has anyone ever heard of the mint polishing away a doubled die? I am sure this is just a well placed spot of polishing or some kind of die damage, but I had to make sure. The spot is where the "extra tree" should be. The raised lines under the trees (in the lake) are cut a little deeper in the die, like the common die scrapes/gouges you see. Thanks all.

If they were to do that it would leave a hump that would be as high as the device that had been doubled.

Looks like Feeder Finger Damage in that area. Possible polishing also, but it looks normal from the image.

It is more common for class 2 doubled dies to be die eroded off the outside devices, while the interior doubling remains. I found a bunch of 1961-D DDRs like that one time. The EPU doubling was still present, outside spread deteriorated away.

With the tilted hub doubling that theses coins had the doubling was small and light so I would think it would be possible to have the doubling removed by die polishing. I've never heard of a case of it happening but it should be possible. You would have to find a coin with identifying die features that are present on the doubled die and the exact same features on a die that doesn't show the doubling. This could be difficult because the same polishing that removes the double image would also likely remove the identifying features.

Dies are polished (lapped) across the entire die face not just in one spot. So the entire die face would be ground down until the doubled feature disappeared. The branches of the trees would get thinner, and the trees maybe slightly further apart. Sometimes they will do a little local work on a die but not so much as to remove a design feature because that WOULD leave a raised lump and defeat the whole reason for working on the die.

Conder101: I,ve seen LMCs with one or two columns narrowed from excessive polishing over a small area. maybe it's not supposed to happen but it does.
