I don't like the looks of the coin. Can you please tell me what the weight is to the nearest 0.1 gram?

I don't have a scale but I can tell you my great grandfather got it around the late 30's and its been in the coin bag for a long long long time that's why it is so clean. It's soft like silver NOT magnetic at all and it's got some weight to it. That's all I can tell you about it.

I'm not overly keen on the look of the surfaces either - but it's hard to tell from the photo. Real ones have really shot up in value this past while - on saying that it's not super rare or anything. Here in the UK I could probably fill my car with petrol on the value.

This particular coin has been counterfeited from the day it was released. Talking about when it was collected does not add much weight to its authencity. I think it has been harshly cleaned looking at the photo but that still doesn't tell me much if it is genuine or not. Unfortunately when it comes to Chinese coins, there are just too many counterfeits. Weight test, magnetic test, density test etc can ALL fail if you do not know what you are dealing with.

You can get a scale relatively cheap on ebay and have it in hand by the weekend.

you can get a decent scale for $10-$15. Unfortionitely as mentioned just because your grandfather has had it since the 30's (or so) it doesn't mean it's real. Looking at it my first thought is that it very well could be a counterfeit. In the link Zookr posted if you go down to the comments you will find a link to a page where you can send in a pic of yor coin and they will tell you if it's genuine or not, so that might be a good option. In any account the coin you posted has been harshly cleaned so that will definitely detract from the value if it is genuine. And if you do send a pic in be sure to let us all know how it turns out as it would help others on here to learn as well! Good luck and can't wait to hear the result.

You do need to recognize that at some point, the piece WAS harshly (abrasively) cleaned. That's not debatable - there are "hairline" scratches across the whole surface, dirt in protected areas. That did harm the value... So whoever actually did it... don't repeat that mistake. With how badly the surfaces the surfaces have been altered, it's hard to say from the photos genuine vs. fake. As mentioned, a ton of fakes of these Fat Man dollars have come out of China over the past decade. If it is indeed a piece that's been sitting for a while, chances are it is authentic (common dates of these - and the Junk Dollar, "Memento" Dollar, and Brit. Trade dollar - WERE essentially just bullion level coins until the Chinese economy and coin market exploded). In this condition, if it's just a common date/type, you have a $50 to no more than a $75 piece.
