That's the truth. I think it was not but a few days ago that Metalman learned something new about Mercury dimes. If he's still learning new things, boy do I have a long way to go..... The research and knowledge is limitless in this hobby.

Wow, that is a beautiful coin! Based on everything I looked just now, that really is a nice one. Like everyone else said, I hope it real. I always wonder how a coin that's 150 years old can look so clean and unsoiled, even if it's a Mint State coin. It must have been kept somewhere pretty safe and untouched for a long time. The only strike weakness (or wear) I see is on the reverse under the eagle where it's holding the arrows. The middle arrow plume does not stand out. And on the obverse, her hair on her forehead does not show that much detail. But the rest is amazingly detailed. The only reason I would wonder if it's cleaned is that it looks so good. Almost too good. I hope it comes back MS63+ for you.

Thanks. I just got it in the mail and it looks great! Five minutes later it was on its way to PCGS. I opted for the 2-day express grade so I get it back fast. I hope it wasn't cleaned. I will scan the results in to the forum when I receive it.

I am highly interested in the results, Kevin. If it slabs, that seller goes to the top of my list. As if I could afford his stuff.

Ditto Dave's comment. Kevin, you're giving that coin top-of-the-line treatment. I've got my fingers crossed for you!

Hi kshaplin, did you have to pay a membership fee to get your coin sent in? Also was the instructions easy to follow for coin certification?
Thanks.......any results yet on your coin?

Very beautiful and rare coin. I'd say at least AU58

I would absolutely get the coin into a service to get authenticated and slabbed. "D" mint gold is extremely popular and could be faked. How lusterous is it?

After 12 days en route to CA from MD, PCGS finally received the coin yesturday. I'm anxiously awaiting the results. I am petrified that it will come back cleaned. I will be ecstatic if it comes back AU55 or better.
Yes, you do have to pay a membership fee for PCGS. It is easy to submit coins, they send you a welcome package with all the necessary forms.

Hi kshaplin, Just thought yu would like to know that I purchased off this guy as well after you posted here, I purchased the auction for the "3little Indians", I paid 622.00 for all 3 but when I got them two of them had been cleaned...I even took them to my coin guy as well just for verification. I still think this guy on ebay is good but I do not think he actually sees the coins....he buys and sells them.....he has some one else pack and take care of this for him. i was able t return the coins no problem. I still look out for his auctions though. did you get your back yet? Snookless

We hadn't heard back from Kshaplin about his coin, but I happened to be cRuising ebay for half eagles and it looks like this same 1856-D gold piece is listed again in the original seller's auctions. I assume that it did not slab at PCGS and that Kshaplin decided to return it to the seller. Did PCGS reject the coin for cleaning? I certainly don't see any other obvious defect. I hope that Kshaplin can fill us in. The eye appeal of this coin is so high that I am tempted to bid on it myself. I would sure like to know why it's back on the market, rather than sealed in a PCGS slab!

Good job on follow up. I'm not collecting these, but it would be nice for others to know if this was returned, or if the seller is recycling pictures?

"If it is too good to be true, then it probably is." kshaplin may be still waiting to get all his money back before he tells the story. It is currently over $3600. I wouldn't touch it.
