This is a modern counterfeit, I don't understand why they'd counterfeit a 1934 - maybe they got the 2 and 4 mixed up. Maybe they figured they'd slip under the radar with the less collectable date.

This is precisely the reason why I don't buy our lovely predecimal currency. I have no idea looking at that that it is a fake. Even when people point it out to me I have difficulty. Sad really.

If you enjoy then hobby the take some time to educate yourself about fakes. Most of them are not hard to pick if you take the time to learn.

Unfortunately time is at a bigger premium than the Perth Mint's markups. Not retired yet, not likely to for a long while to come. What time I do have gets chewed up by the process of living. Too many hobbies, not enough time for any of them.

Reading threads like this has been pretty much the only education on fakes I've had.

I think this forum is wonderful. It has already saved me much heartache. I'll certainly spend more time here and try to learn what I can.

Not sure if this counts as fakes but there is one ebay user (peterwallace) who has been selling falsely advertised coins for some while now, it hasn't been much of a problem as no one has bid on a supposed 1911 half penny proof (not actually a bad circulation strike but like all his coins harshly cleaned) although I did see this listing of a circulation strike incorrectly labelled as a proof and it's a shame as several people seem to be bidding on it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHILLING-19...em4ac7b6f525

That 1930 penny has vertagrease. (at least according to the seller. An underbidder bid on 302 items in the past 30 days with 97% of bids to the same seller (Peter Wallace). I'll take a wild guess that C**C (42) is a bidder with the first name Peter (or a relative with the last name Wallace). Worse yet there are 2 other bidders who have dozens of bids with the same seller on this item. So how many of the 56 bids are dummy bids by shills. At least the buyer got an English obverse

dcoin I checked out that shilling. All 6 bidders appear to have scores of bids with this same seller So is the seller hoping that some mark will see all those bids and assume that the item is worth that money (if no mark bids then the sale is just cancelled). Or is there something else going on (money laundering for example).
