I was reading a different post and saw that some of you use metal detectors and had an inquiry. If you're in a building with dirt floors can a metal detector be used effectively? What if it is a metal building?

Thanks all.

Metal Detector's will work in a metal Building. That's why they find metal, but I recommend dirt fishing, its pays off some times-goldnugget

Are metal detectors purely uni-directional?

If aimed downward, would the ceiling, rafters, and walls interfere?

I use mine on sand playgrounds - and I love the older wooden ones with few bolts. Metal playgrounds have metal posts, creating dead zones where nothing can be detected except the post...

My unscientific feeling is that metal detectors will detect anything within a certain distance of the coil, but this distance is maybe half a foot (the signal doesn't do any better through air than soil - it might actually do worse).

We have been able to detect larger quantities at deeper depths.

They can detect up to 3 feet when the mass is sufficient and there are no interference around.
