Hi all not been finding much of late but just picked a little collection up and found this little belter

Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety
Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety

I am about to send it off for conservation and have been trying to pin its KM number .. which is proving complicated

I think I can say that it is Obv: type 2 and seems to be the 3rd type of the ones listed for the type 2 reverse as it has no dot before HIBERNIA on the reverse but the Nose points to the top of the I in GRATIA and the top of the bows tail points to the top of the G in GEORGIUS.
this is confusing as Type 1 Obv: Nose points to Top of I and bow tail points to I
Type 2.1 nose points to Gap between T & I and bow to between I & U
Type 2.2 Nose points to Gap between I & A and bow to bottom of G (GEO much higher below bust)
Type 2.3 nose points to Gap between I & A and bow to bottom of G
So as you can see from this picture there is no match

Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety

it then gets even more confusing as the variety listed for "Without dot

Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety

As you can see from this 23 the position of the "leaf" is between the N & I
Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety

but on the 24 it is between the R & N which is like my 23 example but still not in exactly the same position
Help-With-1723-Woods-Halfpenny-Variety

also I cannot see any evidence of altered B's to form R's

Nice coin! Well, there are over 100 varieties of the 11 string version. Probably no help but you will need an expert on Wood to narrow it down.

I have 10 Hibernia (1722-1724) pieces in my Irish type set and am now trying to figure out what Martin types they are. I'm getting lost.

As amida17 said "Well, there are over 100 varieties of the 11 string version. Probably no help but you will need an expert on Wood to narrow it down".

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill you might try posting on the C4 (Colonial Coin Collectors Club) forum http://www.colonialcoins.org/index....oins-general and see if there is an expert on Wood.

Martin's book on these is titled The Hibernia Coinage of William Wood (1722-1724) http://www.colonialcoins.org/pages/...book_toc.htm and is available from Charles Davis

Martin's book is great. That should help you narrow it down. This particular date has tons of varieties as mentioned.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that if you are a member of C4 or EAC you can borrow a copy of the Martin book from the C4 lending library. http://www.colonialcoins.org/index....ndinglibrary

The ANA also has a copy of this book which can be borrowed if you are a member.

Hey, Bill ... Instead of paying the freight to NGC which may well not attribute it correctly, try soaking it in acetone to loosen the debris; afterwards, giving it a gentle massage with a Q-Tip. Sorry, I can't help with the attribution. Might Copper Clem help?
