I was just about to purchase some graded Eagles from a very popular online coin seller located in central Florida. I noticed on my order there was state sales tax added in. I live in Florida and NEVER have I paid sales tax on US currency. Florida only charges tax on bullion purchases less than $500 and never on currency of any amount. The live chat was inop so I just canceled the order until I figure out if it was a mistake. Anybody from Florida ordered from them? What's up with them charging sales tax on US coins when no other business I've dealt with does? Rick

Sounds like they dropped the ball; one would think a Florida-based seller would know darn well they didn't have to tax in-state customers on that stuff. I was able to find that law easily enough.

I suspect whoever setup their eCommerce site was not aware of the law.

Quote: I suspect whoever setup their eCommerce site was not aware of the law. Probably so; Florida's relevant law was a bespoke statute passed specifically to cover coins, currency and bullion, and it was passed in 1999. Any coin dealer in the state would be well aware of it.

The dealer probably has their graded Eagles setup as bullion and not coins. Related note: I believe they were trying to change the GA state law to have taxes on coin sales.

But this is a BIG coin seller located in the same town as Univ. of F. I would think with their popularity they would know the tax laws.
I'm thinking it must be what Fuzzy said, I will find out tomorrow for sure. But an Eagle is an Eagle, US currency no matter what it's in.

As a Florida resident as well, I have rarely been charged the 6% state sales tax (Broward County) on any online coin transaction of any amount. I have been getting some really great deals, too!

Finally got to talk to a live person. She said (in her sweet southern voice) that sales tax should not be showing up on the ASE orders and asked me to empty the cart and try again. If that doesn't work call in the order. Rick

So it sounds like they are either honest, or trying to cash in on the people who don't notice.

Exactly what I was thinking Conder. So many companies do this and so many people let it happen. Millions more in profit for them.
