I paid $17 for it and pcgs values 1884 V nickels at G4 at @26, so I'm happy either way, but just curious where others think it grades.

VG, environmental experience.

Not all letters are visible in Liberty to get it above the VG but more than enough to keep it above G, IMHO.

All letters but the 'I' are visible, so VG10 details w. environmental damage.

You have paid a fair price, but not less than that.
Be careful using the PCGS guide for low value coins, and in any case, the listed price is for problem free coins.

I think it would be a VG8 but it is close to a VG10

Not trying to be negative but remember, as Supdog mentioned, PCGS is listing prices for coins that are problem free. This coin if far from that and would fetch much lower prices as a result. Eye appeal is lacking here and there is clear env. damage. I only say this because many times people fool themselves into thinking something is worth more than it is (including myself from time to time). That being said, the price was ok and you didn't get ripped off or anything, so enjoy the coin for what it is.

I thought PCGS prices are prices that for those that are graded that are problem free too. VG-10 Details.

Thanks for the details, guys. I'm still learning new things about coin grading, pricing, etc every day. It's true what the motto says at the top left corner - education really IS the key to coin collecting success!

I'll weigh in at VG-10 with fair to poor eye appeal. The 'Grey Sheet' lists
asking prices for G at $17, a VG at $26 and a Fine at $33.
You did just fine.

I'd agree with the above: VG with environmental damage. Weather it is VG 8 or 10 not really sure it matters too much. I try to stay away from those type of coins. However, I found the 1884 somewhat difficult to come by.

Matt: I did not know the grey sheet had listing for individual dates for Liberty nickels . I thought just type I (1883 nc) and type II (the rest, just common dates). Was there something I was missing?

Also I think PCGS prices are for stabbed coins as well as non-detail grades. So someone would have had to pay for stabbing too. All that being said, the price does not seem outrageous. I would have held out for a Good coin without issues for a similar price, but they are hard to find.

I'm not Matt but I can answer that one. The greysheet comes with a monthly supplement that lists the big series coins and each date-m/m in them. In the weekly it's just the type coins for many series.
