How much did you spend on your type set if you did a dansco 7070. I just went through and saw that I have spent $938 already on 50 of the 76 coins with a FMV of about $1100 on the set (I bought a number of coins that I have appreciated over the years as I have been working on my current set for like 4 years). MY most expensive coin in the set is my 1877s VF Trade dollar followed by my 1929 AU58 Standing Liberty quarter (my favorite coin ever I couldn't go skimpy on this coin and when I priced out the Type I I still priced out an AU). So I went through and kind of priced out the 26 (well 27 coins I need as my Coronet Large Cent was a true filler I spent $2 on) and trying to keep a decent price on the coins (most coins seemed to run around $100 for like vf-xf graded coins but with some vgs and even g's) with a good grade as well and I would need to spend another $2200 for a decent set. WOW didn't realize it would be so much to complete it. Problem is what I am missing is starting to get to that pricey range I mean both Seated Liberty halves, the 20 cent piece and all 3 Half Cents is well over a $1000. So if I finish the set it looks like it would end up with a FMV of almost $3500. So what did you spend on your set? Also got me wondering what is the cheapest you could do this set in $2000 maybe, $1500? Edited by sirdizzy 08/20/2013 2:09 pm

I would not focus on how much you need to spend on completing your set. Each coin is unique so find the ones that fit your set and enjoy the journey.

Just wanted to get an idea of what it would cost to complete it. Already have my next coin picked out a 1883 Shield nickel in XF, gorgeous looking coin.

Wish I could quote the member at CCF who said to the tune, "why pay money on a low graded coin," they are hard to sell. Buy the best you can afford. IMHO I also agree with Muddler. Sirdizzy, post some pictures for CCF people to see.

I finished the basic 7070 type format (no gold) and spent more than I should have ...and I am still in upgrade mode...I will probably never be satisfied.

For me .. I agree with sirdizzy. As far as trying to figure out what a set will cost. I have completed quite a few set, the ones that I enjoyed the most are the set that I planned and funded when I started them. What I am saying is the best way to put a set together is to have the funds first ... or at least know how much you might put into the set each month. When I did my Jefferson nickel set (complete set with proofs) I figured it would cat be around $400. I put that money in a envelope and started looking for the coins. I made a list of about how much coins would cost, then started looking at coin shops .. coin shows and ebay .. and the set was completed in not much time at all. When I start the gold page for my 7070 .. I pretty much did the same thing .. I sold some metal detecting finds .. and some rolls of silver .. and had the funds ready .. but that page still took me about a year .. mostly waiting for good buys to come along. So IMO .. planning on how much you will need to put a set together .. is a good thing. As for the sirdizzy's question .. I started my 7070 over 20 years ago .. the gold page was last year .. from what records I have .. I think I am in the 10K range.

I spent around $4000 for my 7070 that I finished maybe 2-3 years ago; I figure FMV is $5000-6000 now; it is mostly a VF-XF set with some of the earlier coins a little lower to save on cost; some of the later coins are AU or even uncirculated. You can see the pics below; I have upgraded the 1875 half with a nicer 1876-S but otherwise the set is as completed awhile back.

When I do the set I like to buy the nicest coins I can afford, sure when I graded the set out to what I still needed I went with a G-VG on the Seated Liberty dollars as those are still $240 in a G. I am not adverse to buying a filler coin because I just pass that off to my sons set I started (I got another kid on the way in October so I will need to start another set so thats two coins I can upgrade on before I am like ok what do I do with this coin now sell it or keep it). Now when I buy I don't stick to oh I got get this coin in this grade but its nice to know he I got $100 to spend these are the coins I should be looking for with that kind of money, when you got 27 coins to go you can pick and choose what your next purchases might be. For example I sometimes will buy a lesser coin just because it looks better. I was buying one of my two step upgraades on my Barber dime knowing I had $10 to spend and knowing it wouldn't be my final coin as I will upgrade once more for my kids set. I had kind of a dog of G-VG Barber dime that I had just spent $4 on but thats a perfect coin for a little kids set so I was looking at the F-VF Barber dimes and I actually liked the Fine better than the VFs I was seeing so I went with the F for $6 versus grabbing a VF for $8-9 just because I liked the fine coin better. I mean $3 wasn't going to kill me but I went with the coin I liked more. I made the same choice when I bought my Trade dollar I had the choice of a VF or an AU with chop marks, I went with the lower graded chop free coin because I liked it more. But its good to know how much you are going to be spending or how much it is going to cost you to do the set and then pick coins you can afford at the time. I probably won't even do the most expensive last like the Seated dollars, it will probably be when I have the money or I see a nice coin I want but its good to know how much I need for the grade I want and can afford. And I get the never being done part I can see when the set is finally complete spending way more to constantly upgrade. I like that I have two sets for my downgrades to go into though.

The cost basis for my completed 7070 is $1850.28. It was completed last year. I would estimate FMV through an ebay liquidation, net of fees, to be about $2500. There are a few circulation finds and gift coins in the mix. It is my favorite collection. I have absolutely no desire to upgrade, in fact, I've even become fond of the cleaned Seated Half I have in there (it was an early ebay lesson learned). For pleasure purposes alone, I would take my lower grade coins over the higher grade ones any day. My kids' eyes light up when they get to hold the 1798 Large Cent George Washington could have held (they couldn't care less about any slabbed coins I have). The set runs from VG to Proof (and yes, I realize I am a low life to some of you for mixing grades, but I like it that way. I like the coins too.) I probably could have completed it for a few hundred less with some eye appeal compromises, but elected not to go that way. Good luck on your quest to complete the set.

I finished my v2.0 7070 Type Set at a cost somewhere north of $20K, but it's XF and above. I have no gold page either. It will be a part of my estate since I have no plans to part with it OR upgrade it any further. Sure was fun building it!

WOW Paleo that must be a an amazing set, really nice.
But I can't imagine spending that much without doing the gold page, if I were to spend that much I would want the gold page too.

I won't mention what my 7070 set cost, because I have never added it up. I bought each coin when I had saved up the "hobby" money to do so. I took it coin by coin, rather than budgeting for the whole project up front. Worked for me, but everyone is different!
Like you, sirdizzy, when I upgrade a coin, I hand the original down to my daughter. She is developing a pretty decent type set that way. She enjoys it, and if she chooses to liquidate it someday, that's fine with me. Either way, I know it's a gift she appreciates.
